In the moments immediately following the collision, the recreational boat sailed away, leaving behind the severely damaged ferry and its distressed passengers.
Authorities reported that six individuals on the ferry experienced trauma, with two suffering severe injuries that necessitated airlifting to a nearby hospital, where one sadly succumbed to their injuries.
The local fire department classified the incident as a “mass casualty event” due to the significant number of injuries sustained by the passengers onboard the ferry.
Numerous witnesses captured video and photographs of the chaotic scene, showcasing the wrecked ferry floating in the dark waters of Clearwater Bay, a stark reminder of the tragic accident.
Brenda Alvarez, a survivor of the devastating crash, recounted to local news station WFTS how the recreational boat “shattered the entire back of the ferry” and “left a massive dent,” illustrating the force of the impact.
Her husband, who witnessed the event unfold, shared with WFTS that he turned to see the recreational boat “just zooming by” the ferry in a reckless manner.
