Victor Martinez-Hernandez, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador with alleged ties to another homicide in his home country, was arrested on June 14, 2024, at a bar in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His capture was made possible through a combination of tips and DNA tracking, leading to serious charges of rape and murder that have left the community in disbelief.

In a compelling opening statement, Harford County State’s Attorney Alison Healey characterized Morin’s tragic demise as “a mother’s worst nightmare.” She vividly described the Ma & Pa trail, a place where Morin found joy in her daily runs, which ultimately turned into the site of her untimely death at the hands of the accused. This emotional appeal highlighted the profound impact of the crime on the victim’s family and the community.

According to Healey, Morin frequented the trail every day. Concern arose when she stopped responding to family members on August 5, 2023. Her boyfriend, Richard Tobin, took the initiative to search the trail for her, and after failing to locate her, he alerted the authorities. Searchers reportedly discovered a gruesome 150-foot trail of blood leading to her lifeless body, with Healey revealing that Morin was “left to die in a puddle of water” within a culvert, where her blood stained the walls, as reported by the Baltimore Banner.

FOX News reported that Healey stated Morin’s right shoe and socks remained on her body, while her bra had been forcibly pulled up. The prosecutor outlined the horrific extent of the violence inflicted upon Morin, detailing 15-20 head wounds, some of which were described as “deep,” accompanied by clear signs of strangulation. Investigators collected bloodied rocks and sticks as evidence, along with her damaged cellphone and smartwatch, which may provide critical insights into the crime.

As detailed by Healey, DNA evidence collected at the crime scene played a crucial role in building a profile that led investigators to a residence where Martinez-Hernandez resided with family members around December 2023. Family members provided law enforcement with a cellphone number and a Facebook account linked to him, which ultimately allowed police to track Martinez-Hernandez to Tulsa, where he was ultimately apprehended, demonstrating the importance of community cooperation in solving such heinous crimes.

Upon examination of his cellphone, investigators reportedly uncovered searches for “Bel Air,” “Rachel,” and a misspelled version of Morin’s last name, according to Healey. Furthermore, he allegedly denied having ever set foot in Maryland, raising further questions about his involvement and credibility in this case.

“You can be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that all of this is the defendant’s DNA,” Healey asserted. “I am sure you will be convinced that he had a plan to abduct her off the trail, conceal her in the tunnel, drug her, bash her in the head, disrobe her, and leave his DNA behind.” This damning statement encapsulated the prosecution’s argument, painting a chilling picture of premeditated murder.

As the defense team for Martinez-Hernandez took the floor, they cast doubt on the prosecution’s assertions, aiming to establish a reasonable alternative narrative regarding the events surrounding Morin’s tragic death.

“Rachel Morin was brutally murdered. This was a horrible tragedy, but Mr. Martinez-Hernandez isn’t the person who committed this offense,” stated Assistant Public Defender Sawyer Hicks during his opening remarks, positioning the defense’s strategy to question the reliability of the evidence presented.

Hicks went on to describe Morin’s death as a “crime of passion,” suggesting that the perpetrator may not have been a complete stranger but rather someone with a personal grievance. He implied that Morin’s boyfriend, Tobin, might have had a role, questioning the absence of his DNA at the crime scene despite claims that they had been intimate earlier that day.

Tobin has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has previously stated, “I would never do anything to her,” reinforcing his position as a grieving partner in this harrowing situation.

Hicks further noted that Morin and Tobin had met on the same trail, suggesting that she was often the center of attention, capturing the gaze of various men. This could imply that jealousy or resentment from other individuals could have contributed to the circumstances surrounding her death.

Two of Morin’s daughters were among the first witnesses to testify, with one reportedly breaking down in tears as she recounted the day their mother went missing and the moment Tobin contacted the police, illustrating the deep emotional scars left on the family.

Tobin also took the stand, stating that he had proposed to Morin to officially become his girlfriend just five days before her tragic death. After five months of dating, he initially feared she was being unfaithful when she didn’t respond to his texts and calls. He emphasized his cooperation with law enforcement, having provided his cellphone and DNA samples to aid the investigation.

Recalling the moment he learned that her body had been discovered, he shared, “Someone messaged me on Facebook and said they had found her. I freaked out. I cried. I screamed.” His emotional distress highlighted the profound loss and helplessness felt by those closest to Morin.

Martinez-Hernandez entered a not guilty plea earlier this week. He is also facing accusations of a “brutal” assault on a 9-year-old girl and her mother during a home invasion in Los Angeles, which raises further concerns about his history of violent behavior.
