Two significant titles that contributed to the rapid growth of Netflix’s gaming division are set to depart the platform next month. The beloved classics Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will no longer be accessible through Netflix’s library of mobile games after December 13. This change marks a notable shift for avid gamers who have enjoyed these iconic titles as part of their subscription service.
The Netflix app designates December 13 as the “last day to play” for both of these fan-favorite games. However, it’s important to note that there is currently no removal date indicated for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, suggesting that subscribers can continue to immerse themselves in CJ’s compelling story without any additional charges.
A Netflix spokesperson explained, “Just like with series and film, games will be removed from Netflix as licenses expire.” Subscribers will notice a ‘Leaving Soon’ badge that will serve as a notification through the app in advance of any removals. This particular shift in availability comes exactly one year after the addition of these titles, indicating that Netflix likely operated under a 12-month licensing agreement with the publisher, Rockstar.
Earlier this year, Netflix reported that the GTA trio significantly boosted gaming engagement toward the end of 2023. Notably, some users even signed up for Netflix specifically to access these popular games. Despite this surge in gaming interest, Netflix has recently scaled back its gaming ambitions, which included parting ways with some prominent developers who were collaborating on a high-profile AAA title.
After December 13, players can still enjoy Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition versions of GTA III and Vice City on iOS and Android, but they will need to purchase these titles from their respective app stores.
