Grok AI Assistant Launches as a Standalone App

Grok, the innovative AI assistant integrated into the X platform, has now emerged as a fully-fledged standalone application. Just like its counterpart available as a tab within the social media site, the Grok app empowers users to generate images, summarize text, and respond to inquiries, all with a conversational and engaging tone that xAI, the creator of the AI assistant, describes as “humorous and engaging.” This new app is designed to enhance user experience by making AI capabilities accessible in a more convenient format, allowing for seamless interaction and creativity on the go.

Initially, the Grok app underwent a testing phase with a select group of users in December 2024, coinciding with the introduction of a free tier for Grok on the X platform, which is open to all users. Before this rollout, access to Grok required a subscription to X Premium, costing at least $8 per month, providing a glimpse into the future of AI accessibility for a wider audience.

However, the limitations associated with the free access tier — such as a cap of 10 requests every two hours and only three image analysis requests per day — may also be applicable to the Grok app. Users have the flexibility to utilize the app without signing in or can opt to log in using their Apple, X, Google accounts, or a standard email address. It remains uncertain whether subscribing to X Premium offers any additional advantages within the Grok app, similar to the benefits provided on the X platform.

The Grok app faces challenges akin to those encountered by other AI assistants, including issues with accuracy and peculiar choices in image generation, similar to competitors like Gemini and ChatGPT. What sets Grok apart is xAI’s marketing of its capability to tackle “spicy questions” that other AI assistants tend to sidestep. Additionally, a version of the Grok AI model is available as open source. Users are encouraged to explore the app to determine just how “spicy” Grok can be, with the added convenience of not needing to access X to enjoy its features now.
