Grindr’s Return-to-Office Mandate Threatens Unionization Efforts

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has officially lodged a complaint against Grindr, highlighting serious concerns regarding the company’s return-to-office (RTO) policy. As reported by Bloomberg, the agency contends that this mandate not only restricted remote work opportunities but also imposed a de facto relocation requirement for numerous employees, which appears to be a strategic move to undermine a burgeoning unionization effort. According to the Communications Workers of America (CWA), approximately 80 out of 178 Grindr employees resigned in response to last year’s RTO directive, raising significant alarm about workplace dynamics and employee morale.

The NLRB’s general counsel has accused Grindr of breaching labor laws through retaliatory actions against employees who sought to organize for better working conditions. Furthermore, as reported by Bloomberg, the agency asserts that Grindr has also failed to acknowledge the union and engage in meaningful negotiations, further violating established labor regulations. These allegations spotlight the tension between corporate policies and employee rights, particularly in the tech industry where worker organization is gaining traction.

A representative for Grindr refuted the allegations, labeling them as “meritless.” They further stated that the movement to unionize among employees began “only after it was known that the transition back to in-office work was underway,” suggesting that the timing of union card signings was influenced by external factors rather than grievances related to company policies.

According to the CWA, on August 4 of the previous year, Grindr announced a requirement for employees to be present in the office at least two days a week. Notably, a supermajority of workers publicly declared their intention to unionize in July. By the end of August, the union claims that nearly half of the workforce had been compelled to resign, a situation attributed in part to the stringent relocation demands imposed by the company.

Among various concerns raised, the potential need for some of Grindr’s transgender employees to secure new healthcare providers was particularly troubling. The CWA emphasized that the RTO policy imposed a tight deadline, giving employees just two weeks to choose between either terminating their employment at Grindr or relocating to a designated “hub” city for in-person work twice weekly. As highlighted by CNN, many employees who were originally hired to work remotely were suddenly faced with the requirement to report to Grindr offices located in major cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Washington DC.

This incident is not the first time Grindr has faced scrutiny. Earlier this year, the company was embroiled in a lawsuit alleging that it unlawfully shared sensitive personal information—including HIV statuses, test dates, ethnicity, and sexual orientation—with advertising firms without obtaining proper consent from users, raising significant privacy concerns.

In a statement issued to Engadget, Grindr United-CWA hailed the NLRB’s complaint as “another huge victory” for the union. Their full statement elaborated on the situation:

Today’s complaint from the NLRB is another huge victory for our union. After management instated a retaliatory relocation policy just days after we went public about our organizing efforts, more than half of our colleagues were either forced to relocate to a “hub” to work in person, or leave the company with a severance in exchange for our silence.

When we filed an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB last year, we collectively held Grindr accountable in protecting workers’ rights and our right to form a union. That’s why we formed Grindr-United: to ensure collaboration and a seat at the bargaining table.

We hope this NLRB filing sends a clear message to Grindr that, with a union, we are committed to negotiating fair working conditions in good faith. As we continue to build and expand worker power at Grindr, this win in our favor is a positive step toward ensuring that Grindr remains a safe, inclusive, and thriving place for users and workers alike.
