Google Collaborates with The Sphere for 16K ‘Wizard of Oz’

This summer, The Sphere in Las Vegas is set to unveil an extraordinary new experience: The Wizard of Oz at Sphere. This groundbreaking event is made possible through a collaboration with Google and advanced AI technology.

“The power of generative AI, paired with Google’s advanced infrastructure and expertise, is enabling us to create something truly remarkable,” stated Sphere Entertainment Executive Chairman and CEO Jim Dolan in a statement shared with Mashable. “We sought a partner capable of pushing creative boundaries alongside our talented teams at Sphere Studios and Magnopus, and Google emerged as the only company equipped to tackle this challenge on the world’s largest resolution LED screen.”

Even if you haven’t visited Las Vegas, you’re probably familiar with The Sphere. This architectural marvel is constantly going viral, boasting an impressive 580,000 square feet of LED displays that envelop the venue. Inside this one-of-a-kind facility, which accommodates nearly 17,600 spectators, lies an immersive environment featuring wrap-around LED screens equipped with stunning 16K resolution.

Historically, The Sphere has showcased films specifically created for its unique setup. However, this year marks a significant milestone as it prepares to present an existing classic: the beloved 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, adapting this iconic film for the venue is far from straightforward; it’s a complex undertaking.

“Very, very, very big and very, very difficult,” stated Steven Hickson, Google’s director for AI foundation research, as quoted by the Wall Street Journal. “There are scenes where the scarecrow’s nose is barely 10 pixels.”

But why does this pose a challenge? The Sphere’s indoor display boasts a staggering more than 170 million pixels.

To transform The Wizard of Oz for the world’s largest screen, The Sphere enlisted the expertise of the Google Deepmind team to develop an entirely new experience using AI.

Exploring the Complexities of Generative AI in Film Restoration

The primary application of AI in this project is to upscale the film’s visuals, a task that Google has undertaken successfully. AI upscaling is the process of enhancing an image’s resolution not merely by resizing it but also by intelligently filling in missing details from the original content. This technique effectively addresses resolution challenges. While AI upscaling is often seen as one of the less controversial applications of artificial intelligence in the realms of art and filmmaking, it can sometimes yield unsatisfactory results. A notable example is a screenshot from an episode of I Love Lucy on Blu-Ray, which demonstrates the potential pitfalls of this technology (click the image below to see the striking difference).

With Google’s dedicated AI team collaborating on this ambitious project, along with insights from The Wizard of Oz rights-holder Warner Bros. Discovery, it is unlikely that we will encounter significant AI upscaling issues. However, the Wall Street Journal also showcases a small before-and-after comparison of Google’s AI enhancements on The Wizard of Oz for The Sphere, revealing minor glitches such as AI artifacts that are evident.

Nevertheless, the experience at The Sphere extends far beyond mere video upscaling.

According to the Journal, Google utilized generative AI models from its Gemini family, including Veo 2 and Imagen 3, to creatively reimagine entire scenes by extending backgrounds and incorporating characters that were originally out of frame. This means that audiences will witness visuals that go beyond the original framing intentions of the cameras. Google’s advanced AI technology will generate these extensions based on what it anticipates could be present, taking into consideration the full-length film’s narrative.

This approach transcends the mere enhancement of visuals; it delves into the artistic integrity of filmmaking. Directors meticulously shoot and frame scenes for specific artistic reasons, and the use of generative AI may risk altering that original vision.

Earlier this month, a similar generative AI recreation went viral on social media, but not for positive reasons. A user on X shared a video showcasing AI recreations of scenes from the renowned filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. In one notable instance, generative AI transformed a still shot into a sequence where the camera circled 360 degrees around the actor. This post garnered over 4,000 likes.

However, another user on X expressed strong criticism regarding the application of AI in reconstructing Tarkovsky’s artistic vision.

“If the camera was meant to move, Tarkovsky would have had the camera move,” stated the user known as The Kino Corner.

This critique resonated widely, accumulating over 305,000 likes.

The debate surrounding generative AI remains contentious within both the film industry and the broader art community. Mashable has previously reported on the backlash against the integration of AI in films like The Brutalist and Late Night with the Devil.

Despite this, it appears that The Wizard of Oz at Sphere is poised to avoid significant controversy, as it is being developed for a highly specific event that is exclusive to a single venue in Las Vegas.

That said, the success of The Wizard of Oz at Sphere could pave the way for broader acceptance of AI technology in filmmaking, potentially leading to greater adoption across the industry. Anticipate a great deal of attention on Oz at The Sphere, even from those who may not be physically present to witness it.

The Wizard of Oz at Sphere is set to premiere on August 28, 2025.
