For those who have kept their grill active, a good scrub and polish will help ensure it performs optimally. Below are valuable tips and techniques to simplify the cleaning process, so you can enjoy grilling without a hitch.

To begin the cleaning process, it’s essential to disassemble your grill as much as you feel comfortable doing. This includes removing the grates, burner covers, and any other removable components aside from the heating element. By doing this, you can thoroughly inspect the gas grill’s burners or the fire pot in a pellet grill for any signs of wear and tear. If any parts appear to be excessively rusted or damaged, replacement parts are typically available from manufacturers and can be easily swapped out with basic tools.

After removing the components, clear out any excess debris inside the grill. Utilize a cleaner if necessary to assist in this process. For gas grills, debris is usually pushed out through the grease trap, while pellet grills require scraping the grease chute and vacuuming the interior using a shop vac, much like you would after every few hours of use. Don’t forget to empty the hopper of any old pellets that have been sitting since last fall; using stale fuel won’t yield the best cooking results, so starting fresh is advisable.

Many pellet grill manufacturers have designed their products for easy cleaning. For example, Weber’s SmokeFire features removable metal bars that simplify access to the bottom of the chamber. This convenience extends to their gas grills, allowing debris to be vacuumed out or pushed through the grease chute with ease. The catch pan, which collects waste, is also easily accessible from the front of the grill, and the aluminum liner can be replaced rapidly, making maintenance a breeze.

Traeger has also made significant strides in enhancing their pellet grill designs for easier cleaning. Their latest models incorporate a unique “keg” that captures grease and ash, making it simple to detach for cleaning. Additionally, Traeger grills allow for the quick removal of interior components, although these pieces tend to be larger than those found in the SmokeFire. Furthermore, the pellet chute has been relocated to the front of the Timberline and Ironwood models, making it more convenient to switch wood varieties or dispose of old supplies.

It’s crucial to remove as much leftover food debris from your grill as possible for several reasons. Firstly, old food can accumulate and negatively impact the cooking performance and flavor of your dishes. You wouldn’t want the taste of burnt remnants overshadowing that premium ribeye steak. Secondly, in pellet grills, failing to clear out grease and dust can pose safety risks. Grease fires can happen at extremely high temperatures, and excess pellet dust can ignite or even explode. That’s why it’s recommended to vacuum out these areas after every few hours of grilling.

For cleaning the surfaces, it’s wise to utilize an all-natural grill cleaner. There are a plethora of options available, and finding one that suits your needs may take some time. Personally, I prefer Traeger’s cleaning solution, as it’s readily available where I purchase pellets and effectively cuts through stubborn grime. Opting for an all-natural cleaner instead of a regular household product ensures safety on surfaces that come into contact with food. They are also safe to use on the exterior of your grill, preventing damage to chrome, stainless steel, and other materials.

Begin by spraying the inside surfaces with your chosen cleaner and allowing it to penetrate for a few minutes. Wipe everything clean and pay extra attention to particularly dirty areas. The same goes for the grates, bars, and any other pieces that were removed. I prefer to lay these components on a yard waste trash bag, as they are larger than typical kitchen bags, preventing mess on my deck. You can use shop towels for recycling or paper towels if you prefer disposable options; just remember that whatever you choose will be covered in residue, so a pre-wash in a bucket or sink is necessary to avoid transferring grease to your clothing.

When it comes to tools, you won’t need much. While I’ve experimented with grill robots claiming to simplify the task, I’ve found that sticking to the basics is more effective. Once you get the hang of it, cleaning doesn’t take too long at all. It’s advisable to have a dedicated wire brush for grates, which should not be used for any other cleaning purposes, as it will come into contact with food surfaces. Additionally, a smaller wire brush resembling a large toothbrush is handy for cleaning gas grill burners. If you notice any blockage in the flame holes, this brush will help clear the pathway. Lastly, use a plastic scraper, as metal options can scratch the grill surfaces and cause damage, even if it’s on the inside.

If you own a smart grill from brands like Traeger, Weber, or others, it’s essential to power it on and check for software updates well ahead of your first grilling session of the season. Given that you may not have cooked much since last fall, there’s a good chance that manufacturers have released several updates during the downtime. It can be incredibly frustrating to invest time in preparing a brisket, only to find your grill needs to complete an update before you can start cooking. Depending on the complexity of the update and your WiFi strength, this process can significantly extend your cooking time.

Fortunately, checking for updates is a simple and quick process. Just turn on your grill and open the corresponding app on your smartphone. If there’s an update available for your specific model, the app will notify you prominently. If you don’t see an alert right away, check the settings menu as well. Sometimes, for minor updates, companies might not prompt users to refresh immediately. However, starting with the latest firmware is a smart move to ensure your grill operates at peak performance when it’s time to cook.

While I’ll admit I sometimes don’t follow this guideline, it’s crucial to aim for consistency in cleaning after each use. Every time I smoke a fatty cut of meat, like a Boston Butt, I regret not doing at least a quick clean-up right after the meal. Grease accumulation is not only flammable but significantly harder to clean once it cools and solidifies. The same goes for any stuck-on sauces or cheese that might remain on your grates after grilling chicken or burgers. Tackling these messes while the grill is still warm, but no longer hot from cooking, is ideal.

You don’t have to pull out the shop vac or empty the grease bin every single time, but it’s important to keep these residues away from the main cooking area to prevent any safety hazards. A few cups of hot water can help cleanse grease runoff, while that wire brush mentioned earlier is perfect for ensuring the grates are clean. Additionally, doing a light wipe down with an all-natural cleaner will prepare everything for your next cooking session.

Several grill manufacturers have unveiled their product lineups for 2025, offering new and exciting options for summer grilling enthusiasts. Some models are already available, while others will be rolling out in the coming weeks. Weber took the lead by introducing its affordable Smoque pellet grill earlier this January. Starting at $699, this model boasts the same connected grilling technologies as its higher-end Searwood counterpart, but with a simplified controller and design changes that lower the cost. Weber has also improved the internal materials to enhance air and smoke circulation within the cooking chamber. Expect to see the Smoque grills on the market later this spring.

Traeger has already launched its 2025 models, featuring three brand-new designs. The Woodridge series is designed to merge features and performance at more affordable price points. The base model begins at $800 and includes Wi-Fi connectivity. However, for premium features such as Super Smoke mode, enclosed storage, pellet level sensors, or a side burner, you’ll need to upgrade to either the Woodridge Pro or Woodridge Elite. Even the entry-level Woodridge model is a significant improvement over the older Pro Series.

Middleby Outdoors has also announced new models for 2025 across its Masterbuilt and Kamado Joe brands. The Masterbuilt Gravity Series 1150 expands the smart, gravity-fed charcoal options, offering increased cooking space and enhanced storage solutions. Additionally, the Kamado Joe Konnected Big Joe is a larger version of the Konnected Joe reviewed in 2023, maintaining the benefits of Wi-Fi tools and an automatic charcoal starter alongside the ceramic, kamado-style grill advantages.

Lastly, the Brisk-It Zelos 450 integrates the company’s Vera AI cooking platform for an accessible price of just $399. This more compact model follows the company’s successful 2024 Origin series launch. The Zelos 450 remains a versatile smart pellet grill but simplifies features, including a more basic onboard controller, indicating a focus on delivering an AI sous chef experience at a lower price point. This reflects a noticeable trend in the industry.
