Gayle King Reveals She Remains Unfazed by Dating Rumors with Oprah Winfrey
In her conversation with Alex Cooper, Gayle reflected on how the “lesbian couple” headlines initially troubled her, particularly after her divorce in 1993. She and William Bumpus ended their 11-year marriage, during which they raised two children together. During this tough time, Gayle recalled how The National Enquirer suggested that a supposed affair with Oprah was a contributing factor to her divorce.
“First of all, if we were gay, we would be honest about it because there’s nothing wrong with that. I just prefer being with a man.”
Now, Gayle expresses that she is largely indifferent to the rumors. She stated, “I’ve reached a point in my life where not much bothers me anymore. Social media amplifies negativity.”
She further commented, “As long as I feel good about my actions and the people I respect and trust approve of them, particularly someone whose opinion I value, I won’t let it consume me. So, at this stage, I genuinely don’t care.”
Two years prior, the beloved duo confronted similar rumors on the series ‘The Moments That Make Us.’ Gayle reiterated the same sentiments she shared with Alex Cooper this week, emphasizing that they would be open about dating if it were true. Oprah noted that their unique friendship is likely the reason behind such speculation.
“The key to our friendship is that Gayle is more joyful about my successes and achievements than I am about my own. I can’t surpass her happiness; she’s simply irreplaceable. I share in her happiness as well,” Oprah explained during their previous discussion.
Gayle Discusses How Speculative Rumors Impacted Her Romantic Relationships
In the earlier days of their friendship, which has now spanned nearly 50 years, Gayle often urged Oprah to publicly address the rumors on her show. She believed these speculations were hindering her dating life and even affecting her ability to secure Saturday night plans. Despite Gayle’s pleas, Oprah encouraged her to let the rumors slide. “It’s easy for you to say, you’re in a relationship; I’m not,” Gayle responded to Oprah’s advice.
The Origins of Their Enduring Friendship
Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King first crossed paths at a television station in Baltimore. One fateful day, as a snowstorm approached, Oprah invited Gayle to stay at her home, and they have been “inseparable friends ever since.”
