TikTok is innovating its livestreaming features by introducing an enhanced “Fan Club” option designed to amplify viewer engagement significantly. This latest strategy aims to create a more interactive experience for users, encouraging them to actively participate in livestream events.
The newly introduced Fan Clubs serve as a revamped iteration of TikTok’s previous “Creator’s Team.” This feature empowers livestreamers to enhance community involvement by gamifying the viewing experience, thereby fostering a stronger connection between creators and their audiences.
Viewers can become members of a creator’s Fan Club by sending a virtual gift during a livestream. Upon doing so, they automatically join the Fan Club, which allows them to follow the creator and receive a series of engaging tasks to complete in order to elevate their status within the community. This creates a dynamic interaction between the creator and their fans.
TikTok elaborates on this new feature, stating:
“Fan Club levels provide your followers with opportunities to unlock various perks. As they accomplish missions to earn fan points and ascend through levels, they will receive rewards and access to exclusive Gifts that can be sent during a creator’s LIVE sessions.”
These “missions” consist of activities ranging from watching livestreams to engaging through comments and sending virtual gifts, thereby creating a rich tapestry of interaction.
Essentially, while these tasks encourage viewers to engage more with the streamer’s content, they also facilitate the accumulation of points within the Fan Club, creating a competitive environment where members are ranked on a leaderboard based on their engagement levels.

This competitive aspect is designed to enhance overall engagement among users:
“To maintain your fan status, you must accumulate points within 7 days of the creator going LIVE; otherwise, your membership will be automatically paused (we’ll send you a reminder if your membership is about to be paused). As a Fan Club member, you can earn rewards for accumulating points and leveling up. Advancing to higher levels within Fan Clubs unlocks exclusive rewards such as access to a private creator chat room, unique gifts to be sent during LIVE events, member badges that will appear next to your username during LIVE interactions, and appearance lights that highlight your username when participating in LIVE.”
In essence, TikTok is motivating users to become the most dedicated supporters of their favorite livestreamers by introducing a competitive component to commenting and gifting during each stream.
This approach is likely to prove effective. YouTube is also experimenting with a similar model, featuring an engagement leaderboard for livestreams, primarily targeted at gaming creators for now. Given that the audience for gaming content often enjoys competition, creating a means for them to engage and express their support aligns perfectly with their interests.
TikTok is pursuing a similar strategy, and based on the success of its past Creator’s Team initiative, it is poised to significantly enhance user engagement. TikTok has reported that active team members sent three times as many gifts and spent four times longer watching livestreams compared to average followers.
While the initiative may appear to be a straightforward engagement tactic, it effectively drives interaction, and this revamped experience for livestream fans is set to enhance viewer participation significantly.
However, it’s essential to note that this feature is not yet available in all regions.
TikTok has been actively promoting this feature on its TikTok LIVE profile, particularly targeting creators in the Asian region. I have reached out to TikTok for further details regarding the availability of this feature, but as of the time of publication, I have not received a response.
Interestingly, TikTok is also testing a similar engagement strategy for live creators, with some users encountering a new “LIVE Journey” activation within the app:

From the screenshots shared by social media researcher Jonah Manzano, it is evident that this feature is designed to motivate creators, rather than fans, in order to increase the number of users streaming within the app.
This initiative is part of TikTok’s broader strategy aimed at enhancing livestream engagement with the ultimate goal of transforming that engagement into in-app sales activities. The phenomenon of livestream commerce has gained significant traction in China, and if TikTok successfully replicates this model in other markets, it could lead to substantial revenue growth.
It is evident that TikTok is making this a priority, and it will be fascinating to observe whether more creators start going live as a result of these enhancements.
