Explore the Key New Features of the Nintendo Switch 2
Enhanced Display and Dock Functionality
The Nintendo Switch 2 boasts an impressive 1080p resolution with a 7.9-inch display that features a 120Hz refresh rate and supports HDR compatibility. When connected to the dock, the console can deliver outputs of up to 4K resolution at 120Hz with variable refresh rates, ensuring that gaming experiences are visually stunning and fluid.
Innovative Joy-Con and Pro Controller Designs
The newly designed Joy-Con 2 for the Nintendo Switch 2 features a magnetic attachment mechanism with an easy-release button for user convenience. Notably, the controllers have larger SL and SR buttons for enhanced multiplayer gameplay, and these buttons are constructed from durable steel, securing them to the console’s magnetic system.
In a significant upgrade, the analog sticks are now larger and more comfortable, comparable to those found on PlayStation 5 or Xbox controllers. Although they lack Hall effect sensors to prevent the notorious “stick drift” issue seen in earlier models, they promise a more enjoyable gaming experience.
Additionally, the Joy-Con 2 incorporates an advanced vibration feature called “HD Rumble 2,” which enhances the tactile feedback during gameplay. Each controller also integrates an optical sensor, allowing it to function similarly to a mouse, alongside a versatile C button, which we will explore further.
The updated Pro Controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 is designed with the same advanced features as the Joy-Con 2, incorporating HD Rumble 2 and the C button. It also includes customizable GL/GR buttons located on the back, along with a standard audio jack for headset connectivity.
Both the Joy-Con 2 and Pro Controller come equipped with integrated Amiibo support. The Switch 2 package includes two Joy-Con 2 controllers, while additional pairs can be purchased for $90. The Pro Controller will retail for $80.
Discover the Unique Functions of the C Button
The newly introduced C button serves as a dedicated access point for initiating chat sessions with friends. Beyond standard voice chat functionality, Nintendo has innovatively integrated a video-sharing capability akin to Discord, allowing players to showcase their gameplay and view others’ screens simultaneously.
This GameChat feature operates using a microphone built into the console, although it also supports external headsets. Additionally, Nintendo plans to release a $50 camera that connects via the USB-C port on the console’s top, enabling users to stream their face alongside their gameplay.
GameCube Games Are Back on Switch 2
The Switch 2 will support a selection of classic GameCube games through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. At launch, players can access three iconic titles: F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and Soul Calibur II, bringing nostalgia and excitement to new and veteran gamers alike.
Unleashing the Power with Improved Specifications
A standout feature of the Switch 2 is its all-new processing unit and graphics capabilities, along with a substantial increase in storage — 256GB compared to the 64GB offered by the Switch OLED. This expansion also includes support for more advanced and larger microSD cards, enabling enhanced gaming experiences and allowing for richer multi-platform games that were previously unfeasible on the original, less powerful Switch. With anticipated titles like Cyberpunk 2077 set to launch alongside the Switch 2, a wealth of game ports are expected to be feasible.
In terms of connectivity, another significant enhancement is the integration of Wi-Fi 6, which will dramatically improve the download speeds compared to the original system. Furthermore, the new dock includes an Ethernet port, ensuring a stable and reliable internet connection for gamers.
Immerse Yourself in the Gaming Experience
Press members had the opportunity to experience the Switch 2 firsthand, providing feedback on several showcased titles. Our impressions of Mario Kart World reflect its status as an exceptional launch title, offering deeper gameplay mechanics and superior graphics compared to previous Mario Kart entries. While the core gameplay remains intact, players will discover numerous new features and play styles to explore.
In terms of hardware, the Switch 2 represents a considerable advancement from the original system, presenting a more polished and refined experience. Although it may not feature an OLED screen, the 7.9-inch LED display offers outstanding visual quality that is sure to impress gamers.
Mark Your Calendars: Release Date for the Nintendo Switch 2
The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025.
Essential Pre-Order Information for Nintendo Switch 2
Initially, pre-orders were slated to commence on April 9, but Nintendo announced on April 4 that these plans were suspended indefinitely due to the tariffs imposed by the U.S. government. Despite this delay, the release date remains unaffected.
An April 11 report from IGN suggested a potential new pre-order date of May 8, but this has since been retracted. This date was intended for Nintendo to officially announce the first batch of pre-orders through its website.
Pricing Details for the Nintendo Switch 2 Revealed
On April 2, Nintendo disclosed that the Switch 2 will retail for $450 as a standalone unit, or $500 when bundled with a digital copy of the new Mario Kart World game. This pricing is significantly higher than the original Switch, which launched at $300 and has maintained that price since. Compared to entry-level current-generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft, the Switch 2 is also positioned at a premium price point.
When compared to Valve’s Steam Deck, which is priced at $400 for the LCD model or $550 for the basic OLED model, the Switch 2 offers competitive pricing within the handheld gaming market.
However, following the pricing announcement, Nintendo paused its pre-order schedule to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Given the heavy tariffs imposed on Nintendo’s Asian production facilities, it appears they have little choice but to pass on some of these costs to American consumers. The shifting tariff policies, including President Trump’s recent adjustments, have complicated the situation further, making it uncertain how much of the components and assembly for U.S.-bound Switch 2 consoles will originate in China.
What is the Estimated Battery Life of the Switch 2?
Nintendo has stated that the Switch 2 will provide a battery life ranging from 2 to 6.5 hours on a single charge. This estimate is similar to that of the original Switch, which was rated for 2.5 to 6.5 hours, though subsequent revisions improved that figure. The company has cautioned that “this time is an estimate … battery life will depend on the games you play and usage conditions,” indicating variability based on user experience.

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Backwards Compatible with Previous Titles?
Nintendo confirmed in November 2024 that the Nintendo Switch 2 will indeed feature backwards compatibility. This means that players will have access to their existing library through Nintendo Online, providing opportunities to enjoy classic titles.
In the initial press release for the Switch 2, Nintendo reaffirmed that both physical and digital Switch games will operate on the new system. However, they did note that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Further details regarding compatibility were provided through a guide released by Nintendo.
As of April 1, the majority of Switch 2 games have been marked as compatible; however, several popular titles are reported to have minor issues. Nintendo has classified most of these as “under investigation,” indicating that fixes may be implemented before the official launch. The company is thoroughly testing all Switch games for compatibility.
Currently, only one game is listed as incompatible: Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, which cannot function with the Switch 2 due to its physical design, as the headset does not accommodate the new console.
Will Older Games Be Enhanced for the Switch 2?
The original Switch has faced challenges running some of the latest generation software, leading to questions about whether these titles could be upgraded to utilize the enhanced capabilities of the Switch 2. Currently, Nintendo has not provided clarity on this issue. In developer interviews, they mentioned that older games are processed through a real-time translation system, somewhat akin to how Rosetta allows older software to run on modern Macs.
During their testing phase for compatibility, there were instances where loading times improved, and game performance became more stable, although no specific details have been disclosed about these enhancements.
In addition to backward compatibility, Nintendo is launching premium “Switch 2 Edition” upgrades for select titles. These enhancements will include improved resolutions and frame rates, as well as additional features and content. Exact details vary by title, but it’s confirmed that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will support both 4K at 60 fps and 1080p at 120 fps options on the Switch 2.
Currently, confirmed titles for the Switch 2 Edition include:
-
Super Mario Party Jamboree
-
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
-
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
-
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
-
Pokémon Legends: Z-A
-
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
For the two mainline Zelda titles, the upgrades will be included with a Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership or available for $10 each. Pricing for upgrades on other games has yet to be disclosed by Nintendo.
What Will the Switch 2 Cartridges Taste Like?
As many gamers may recall, the original Switch cartridges were purposefully made to taste terrible to deter users from putting them in their mouths.
In a similar vein, the Switch 2 cartridges are designed to taste unpalatable, primarily to prevent accidental ingestion by children or pets. While the specific substance used to coat the Switch 2 cartridges remains undisclosed, Nintendo’s Takuhiro Dohta has advised against licking them. He stated, “We don’t want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption. We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you’ll spit it out.”
