Waymo Expands Its Driverless Technology Testing to Japan, Marking a Historic Milestone

Waymo is set to launch its groundbreaking driverless car technology in Japan, initiating tests in a foreign market for the very first time. As reported by CNBC, the company plans to commence trials with its Jaguar I-PACE vehicles in Tokyo starting in early 2025, with ambitions to remain in the country for an “extended period.” During this experimental phase, which will span several quarters, human drivers from Japan’s prestigious taxi company, Nihon Kotsu, will operate Waymo’s vehicles. This collaboration aims to meticulously map the bustling streets of Tokyo, particularly navigating through key areas such as Shinjuku and Shibuya, enhancing the technology’s localization.

The data collected from these real-world tests will serve as a vital resource for training Waymo’s advanced self-driving system. Additionally, the company will replicate Tokyo’s unique driving conditions on a closed course in the United States, where it will deploy more of its robotaxi fleet for rigorous testing. This gathered data will further enrich their training processes. Although Waymo has not yet specified when they will begin offering public rides, they have established a partnership with Japan’s GO taxi app, paving the way for future driverless ride options. Notably, as highlighted by CNBC, Japan is eager to embrace autonomous transportation solutions to accommodate its aging population, despite having a highly efficient train system. With recent legislative changes allowing for level 4 autonomous driving, the country is positioning itself at the forefront of this technology.

In the United States, Waymo currently operates its driverless vehicles in major cities like Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Over recent months, the company has unveiled ambitious plans to expand its presence in additional locations, fueled by a substantial $5.6 billion funding round aimed at facilitating growth into cities such as Austin and Atlanta within the next year. Furthermore, Waymo intends to deploy its Jaguar I-PACE vehicles in Miami by early 2025, with plans to offer public rides in the city by 2026, marking yet another significant step in their expansion strategy.
