Magic: The Gathering Arena developers at Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast are on the verge of unionization, as announced by the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The CWA has reported that it has achieved a “supermajority” support among employees for forming a union chapter named United Wizards of the Coast (UWOTC-CWA). A formal election request has been filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). However, this request will be rescinded if Hasbro agrees to voluntarily acknowledge the union by the deadline of May 1st, which could significantly change the future of workplace representation for these developers.

“At Wizards, we’re advocating for greater input in decisions regarding layoffs, enhanced accountability at all levels, and a sustainable wage that enables employees to construct a viable life,” expressed UWOTC-CWA member and senior software engineer Damien Wilson. He further noted, “I feel optimistic about our potential achievements here and remain aware of the reasons why this unionization is essential for our community.” This highlights the growing demand for employee empowerment and fair treatment within the gaming industry.

Employees have identified several critical issues that necessitate attention, including safeguards against layoffs, the establishment of clear policies for remote work, the implementation of generative AI regulations, and the avoidance of mandatory crunch periods. They also seek “heightened transparency and fairness” within the workplace environment. “This situation impacts not only Wizards of the Coast; it reflects the structure of most American workplaces,” Wilson added, emphasizing the broader implications of their efforts. “Unions serve as the essential counterbalance needed to safeguard our craft and ensure fair treatment.” This collective action reflects a significant trend within the gaming industry.

The movement to unionize gained momentum in 2023, following widespread layoffs at Hasbro that affected nearly 2,000 employees, as reported by software engineers to Kotaku. Developers expressed their concerns regarding remote work policies, stating that decisions made by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast have not aligned with the core values held by their workforce. Such concerns underscore the need for a more engaged and supportive workplace culture that truly reflects the interests of all employees, particularly in a rapidly evolving industry.

The CWA has played a pivotal role in recent unionization efforts throughout the gaming sector, collaborating with workers from various companies, including Blizzard and ID Software, as well as independent developers from publishers such as Heart Machine. According to the CWA, over 4,000 employees have successfully organized within the gaming industry as part of the CODE (Campaign to Organize Digital Employees). CWA District 7 Vice President Susie McAllister stated, “Every worker deserves job security, fair compensation, and a position at the decision-making table.” This statement reflects the broader movement towards worker rights and representation in a field that has seen significant changes in recent years.
