Tom Hardy’s Transformation into the Kray Twins
In the film Legend, Tom Hardy took on the challenge of portraying the infamous Mafioso brothers, Reginald “Reggie” and Ronald “Ronnie” Kray. Reflecting on his performance, Tom noted that shifting between these two complex characters felt “fairly simple” for him. However, the real challenge lay in convincing the audience that they were witnessing two separate performances rather than a single actor playing dual roles. To enhance the authenticity of his portrayal, Hardy utilized a body double, who assisted in many scenes, particularly during the intense confrontations between the brothers.
“No matter I laid down in the morning, I had to genuinely follow up in the afternoon with the other character. The fight scene between the brothers is a prime example where we had to meticulously remember that every interaction I made with my brother’s character in the morning had to be mirrored in the afternoon. If I slapped Ron, for instance, that action had to translate back to Reggie in the next scene,” Tom shared with EW.
He elaborated, “If I’m portraying Reggie in the morning and I slap Ron, wearing rings, I must revisit that interaction, ensuring the slap as Ron is reciprocated. I ended up experiencing twice the physicality, and so did my body double, Jacob.”

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Twin Portrayal in ‘The Man in the Iron Mask’
In one of his earlier roles, Leonardo DiCaprio played the dual characters of King Louis XIV and his twin brother Philippe Bourbon in The Man in the Iron Mask. Mark Ruffalo’s Transformation into Twins in ‘I Know This Much Is True’
Mark Ruffalo portrayed the twin brothers Thomas and Dominick Birdsey in the critically acclaimed miniseries I Know This Much Is True. He dedicated himself to fully embodying each character, gaining 30 pounds to authentically portray Thomas, reflecting the impact of medication on his character’s schizophrenia. To achieve this transformation, he filmed all of Dominick’s scenes in the first 15 weeks before taking a five-week break to prepare for Thomas.
“We aimed for a clear distinction between the two roles. It wasn’t a simple task to just switch characters on the same day. We took six weeks off specifically to create a separation between these two individuals,” Mark shared during the TV Critics Association Winter Press Tour.
He added, “Thomas is on medication, including mood stabilizers and antipsychotics. Gaining weight was mentally and physically challenging. The five weeks I spent gaining weight were surprisingly isolating; I didn’t expect it to be so tough. Eating excessively took away some of the joy associated with food.”

Armie Hammer’s Dual Role in ‘The Social Network’
Armie Hammer portrayed the real-life twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in the 2010 film The Social Network. Initially cast alongside actor Josh Pence, it was decided shortly into production that the twins needed to appear identical, leading to Armie being the sole actor featured in the role. Josh remained involved as a body double, with some of his scenes enhanced using CGI to replace his face with Armie’s.
“I would always start with Cameron while Josh played Tyler. We would film until [David] Fincher was satisfied with the take, after which we would switch roles. I’d change my outfit and hairstyle, using that time to transition into the other character,” Armie explained to The Wrap.
He continued, “After switching, I would sit in Josh’s position and the rest of the crew would clear the set. The camera would be set on an automatic system, and we would use physical markers to indicate where each character would be. An audio playback of my performance as Cameron would guide me while I filmed Tyler.”
Rachel Weisz’s Chilling Dual Roles in ‘Dead Ringers’
Rachel Weisz took on the challenging roles of Beverly and Elliot Mantle in the psychological thriller Dead Ringers, which originally premiered in 1988. Rachel reflected on her experiences, describing the process as “mind-bending,” as she physically transitioned between the two very different characters.
“We started with Elliot, who sets the pace as a more assertive and quick-thinking character. My scene partner, Kitty Hawthorne, would deliver Beverly’s lines while I embodied Elliot. Afterward, I would go to hair and makeup to transform into Beverly, all while Kitty remained on the other side of the screen as Elliot, without speaking,” she shared with THR.
She elaborated, “I had an earwig playing the lines I recorded as Elliot, responding as Beverly while working with Kitty. It was a unique challenge to have one twin in my ear while I was physically portraying the other. The experience pushed my limits and allowed me to explore new depths as an actress.”

Troian Bellisario’s Dual Roles on ‘Pretty Little Liars’
Troian Bellisario portrayed the character Spencer Hastings in the popular series Pretty Little Liars for seven seasons. The plot thickened when it was revealed that she had an evil twin, Alex Drake, who was raised in England. Troian took on both roles, complicating matters further as she sometimes portrayed Alex while pretending to be Spencer. Reflecting on her experience, Troian emphasized the effort she invested in making the characters distinct and perfecting Alex’s accent.
“Alex is quick-witted, colorful, and has a very distinct demeanor, which I needed to contrast against Spencer’s more reserved nature. Even when impersonating Spencer, I focused on bringing out the tension in Alex’s mouth and the stiffness in her American accent,” Troian explained to ET.
She expressed her initial concern about the lack of differentiation between the two characters but felt satisfied looking back, particularly in the series finale, where she could distinctly see the differences between Alex and Spencer.
Lisa Kudrow’s Iconic Twin Roles on ‘Friends’
Lisa Kudrow gained fame for her portrayal of twin sisters Phoebe and Ursula Buffay on the beloved sitcom Friends, as well as playing twins in Mad About You. The decision to make these characters twins stemmed from their concurrent airing on the same network. At that time, Lisa was already acting on Mad About You when she was cast in Friends, prompting network executives to create a backstory to explain her dual appearances.
“The network felt the audience needed a reason to understand why they were seeing the same actress with the same voice on two different shows at back-to-back times. It became necessary to provide an explanation for continuity purposes,” she remarked during an interview with Emmy TV Legends.
