Meta recently released an interview featuring Rachel Peterson, the Vice President of Data Centers, on Thursday, amidst growing criticism regarding its extensive data center projects across the United States. In this interview, Peterson highlighted the advantages of expanding data centers and explained Meta’s intentions to positively impact local economies.

The 16-minute video includes Peterson’s insights on the company’s strategy for data center development, addressing various factors that influence their planning process.

Peterson articulated Meta’s ambition of achieving “personal superintelligence” for all users, emphasizing the necessity for immense data processing capabilities to support its artificial intelligence initiatives.

She elaborated on her interpretation of personal superintelligence, stating it involves having top experts who can understand individual preferences and tailor experiences to enhance personal efficiency and effectiveness.

To realize this vision, Meta’s AI frameworks require substantial data processing power to deliver personalized services on a large scale.

Consequently, Meta has accelerated its data center development, pledging over $600 billion to U.S. data center ventures within the next three years.

Peterson noted that most of Meta’s data center construction activities have commenced within the last two years as the company has expedited its program.

However, these projects have also resulted in adverse effects in certain areas.

In Morgan County, Georgia, Meta’s data center initiatives have caused water contamination and issues with utility services, leading Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to advocate for restrictions on further development. Similarly, in Fayetteville, Georgia, Politico reported that an AI infrastructure project consumed 30 million gallons of unmetered water, adversely affecting local residents. Meanwhile, in Northern Virginia, data center operations in Loudoun and Fairfax counties utilized nearly 2 billion gallons of water in 2023, as reported by The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. This situation compelled local water authorities to increasingly depend on potable water instead of reclaimed water for cooling purposes.

The public’s backlash against data centers has resulted in a notable decrease in support for these initiatives, despite Meta and other companies presenting the long-term economic advantages.

According to a recent study by Time Magazine, only one-third of Americans favor the speed of data center development. Conversely, over 300 municipalities have implemented bans or moratoriums on the construction of hyperscale data centers.

On July 18, a national protest against data centers took place, featuring 142 demonstrations across 42 states.

Regarding mitigating negative effects, Peterson stated that Meta’s site assessment procedure for data centers considers factors such as power, water, labor availability, and other resources to ensure efficient construction.

Peterson also emphasized Meta’s commitment to community engagement, stating that the area must be a place where the company intends to establish roots for 20 years, indicating a desire to actively participate in the community.

She mentioned that Meta aims to restore more water than it consumes and collaborates with utility providers at data center sites to guarantee access to necessary resources while minimizing impacts on local residents.

Peterson pointed out that Meta’s infrastructure contributions sometimes reduce utility costs in regions surrounding data centers by enhancing the efficiency of the local grid.

“This is a misconception that some people hold about us and other data centers, that we come in and take more than our fair share, [and] passing on costs. In reality, our investments often assist the electric grid in achieving reliability and reducing costs that would otherwise be passed on to everyday consumers,” Peterson explained.

She added that Meta’s data centers are designed as closed-loop systems, meaning they do not release waste, and the water usage at their facilities is “quite minimal.”

This interview is part of Meta’s ongoing public relations effort to address concerns surrounding its data center projects, aiming to maintain community support and facilitate the progress of its developments.

In June, Meta introduced a new initiative known as America’s Workforce Academy, which aims to partner with various construction-related organizations to offer training and job placement opportunities for individuals in areas where the company is developing its data processing infrastructure.

Overall, Meta hopes that this approach will alleviate concerns and win over more community members. as more regions report issues related to data center development, the company may still encounter significant opposition.
