You can now tailor your YouTube algorithm experience using straightforward language.
On Wednesday, Google introduced a range of innovative, AI-powered features for YouTube, with the Custom Feeds button being a notable highlight. This feature enables users to create personalized feeds by simply describing the type of content they wish to see using plain language. For instance, YouTube provided examples like “evening relaxation with long documentaries” and “new DIY creators” to illustrate how users might specify their preferences.
The custom feed tabs will be conveniently located on the YouTube homepage beneath the Search bar, accessible through the “Your custom feeds” button. Upon clicking this button, the AI will also suggest tailored feed options based on your interests. Personally, I received suggestions such as “cozy pop girl feed” and “AI policy summaries under 15 minutes.”
After you set up a customized feed, you can easily switch back to the standard YouTube algorithm. you have the flexibility to revisit and modify your preferences at any time, allowing you to make your requests as detailed or as broad as you wish.
Personalizing algorithms has become increasingly popular across social media platforms. For instance, Meta’s Instagram launched a “Your Algorithm” tab late last year, providing users with insights into what influences their Feed or Reels algorithms and enabling them to adjust their content preferences. Meta also recently introduced a custom feed feature on Threads, its competitor to X. On TikTok, users can directly communicate their content preferences, prompting the platform’s algorithm to adapt accordingly by filtering out specific keywords or synonyms via its AI-driven Smart Keyword Filters functionality.
On the same day, Spotify began rolling out a comparable customization feature. Premium subscribers aged 18 and older in the United States can access the beta version of Taste Profiles. This feature not only reveals how Spotify’s algorithm interprets users’ music, podcast, and audiobook preferences but also empowers them to modify it. Users can find this feature in the mobile app by tapping their profile picture and selecting Taste Profiles. Spotify will provide three concise summaries explaining how it curates content across music, podcasts, and audiobooks. Below each summary is a “Tell us more” section, where users can communicate their preferences using straightforward language.
According to Spotify’s press release, “Your notes act as gentle guidance, steering your Home feed toward music, podcasts, and audiobooks you’ll be eager to explore while steering you away from content that no longer aligns with your taste.” They also mentioned that changes typically reflect within a few hours, and users have the option to edit or delete their notes whenever they choose.
These features across various platforms predominantly rely on AI technology, enabling an intuitive, plain-language interface for user-driven customization while creating highly personalized social media feeds that companies believe will enhance user engagement.
“Today, our apps feel like algorithms that recommend content,” stated Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg during an earnings call earlier this year. “Soon, you’ll open our apps, and you’ll interact with an AI that understands you, capable of showing you excellent content or even generating personalized content tailored to your preferences.”
