Judge Greg Mathis is currently embroiled in a lawsuit that paints him as a volatile individual. A city worker from Los Angeles, identified as Ricardo Acosta, is taking legal action against Mathis, alleging that the judge threatened his life during a confrontation in July 2023. More than a year after the incident, Acosta is seeking justice and reparations for the emotional turmoil he claims to have endured.
Acosta’s lawsuit alleges assault and emotional distress, and he is pursuing an undisclosed amount in damages as compensation for the psychological impact of the alleged threats.
Unpacking the Confrontation Between Judge Mathis and the City Worker
According to the allegations put forth by Ricardo Acosta, the incident took place while he was on duty with the L.A. Department of Water and Power. Acosta claims that during his shift, he was working in front of Judge Mathis’s residence, and his dump truck inadvertently obstructed the driveway. This led to a heated confrontation when Mathis attempted to exit his garage and found himself unable to do so.
In a moment of frustration, Mathis allegedly exited his vehicle and approached Acosta’s dump truck, expressing his displeasure in a loud and aggressive manner. Reports indicate that Mathis demanded Acosta to “move the fking truck out of the way.” When Acosta requested that Mathis step away from the rear of the truck for safety reasons, the judge reportedly escalated his aggressive behavior, stating that he did not “give a fk” and provocatively challenged Acosta to “run him over and see what happens.”
Following this confrontation, Judge Greg Mathis is accused of retreating into his home only to reemerge brandishing a firearm. Witnesses allege that he threatened to “bust a cap” at Acosta, escalating the situation to a dangerous level. Ultimately, Mathis drove away but not without issuing another threat regarding the use of his weapon. This incident first came to light via TMZ, which sourced information from law enforcement reports in July 2023.
Response from Judge Mathis’ Legal Team Regarding the Allegations
In response to the lawsuit, Judge Greg Mathis’ legal representation appears to be dismissive of the claims made by Acosta. Anahita Sedaghatfar, Mathis’s attorney, characterized the lawsuit as a “last ditch attempt” at financial exploitation.
“Mr. Acosta’s version of events does not align with what actually took place during the incident, which occurred over a year ago,” Sedaghatfar stated in a press release to TMZ.
She further asserted that the police report filed with the Los Angeles Police Department contains numerous inaccuracies. Sedaghatfar also argued that Judge Mathis felt threatened by Acosta and other city workers, claiming that he feared for the safety of himself and his family due to alleged threats made against them. Additionally, the attorney mentioned that Mathis experienced a sense of false imprisonment due to the dump truck blocking his driveway.
“The fact that the LAPD did not even investigate Mr. Acosta’s claims indicates they lack any real merit. If Mr. Acosta pursues this lawsuit, we will not only vigorously defend our client but will also file cross-claims against him for his unlawful actions and ongoing defamation of Judge Mathis,” Sedaghatfar declared.
As of now, Judge Greg Mathis has not made any public comments regarding the lawsuit. Recently, he and his wife, Linda Reese, discussed their journey towards reconciliation after she filed for divorce.
