Is Google Facing Competition from ChatGPT in Online Discovery?
At this point, the answer is no.
According to a comprehensive analysis of online search traffic compiled by the experts at Visual Capitalist, OpenAI’s ChatGPT is still significantly behind Google in terms of search volume. Furthermore, Google is enhancing its own search capabilities by integrating AI-driven answers into its results, which may help it maintain its dominant position against emerging competitors like ChatGPT.
Data shared by NP Digital during the Web Summit 2025 indicates that Google continues to excel in overall web search activity, facilitating approximately 13.7 billion searches daily. In comparison, Instagram ranks second with 6.5 billion searches per day. Interestingly, platforms like Snapchat and LinkedIn also show significant daily search activity, surpassing traditional giants like Facebook, Bing from Microsoft, and Pinterest.
Initially, I would have expected these platforms to generate more search activity than Snapchat, yet NP Digital states that their findings derive from multiple sources, which may highlight inconsistencies in tracking methodologies. This variation could point to how different platforms measure user engagement and search activity.
Regardless, the key takeaway is that ChatGPT has a considerable journey ahead to establish itself as a primary search engine. It is, however, experiencing rapid growth. As more individuals engage in conversations with AI chatbots, this trend is evolving into a more routine method of searching for information, indicating a shift in user behavior towards AI-assisted searches.
