OpenAI has unveiled a groundbreaking feature that integrates directly with Apple’s iMessage app through ChatGPT, a move that is likely to stir concerns among Apple’s leadership in Cupertino.
According to Bloomberg, the latest update allows ChatGPT users—currently limited to Work and Codex users utilizing Apple Silicon Macs—to perform actions such as reading, composing, and sending text messages. Users can also search for message summaries and other relevant information. This development comes as Apple remains vigilant about user privacy, and currently, it is in the midst of a lawsuit against OpenAI over allegations of corporate espionage.
A demonstration of the feature on X reveals that it serves as an effective link between the macOS applications for ChatGPT and iMessage.

Bloomberg highlighted that users need to navigate through “multiple opt-in menus in both the ChatGPT application and Apple’s operating system” to enable this feature. This includes modifying privacy settings in Mac’s System Preferences and granting the ChatGPT application permissions to access contacts and automation. OpenAI confirmed to Bloomberg that this feature operates locally on the Mac, utilizes existing system functionalities, and does not create an index of all messages.
Apple has yet to respond to Bloomberg’s request for comments regarding this new feature.
This scenario may appear unusual to Windows or Linux users, who are accustomed to seeing desktop applications implement similar features using standard APIs without facing pushback from operating system developers.
Integrating ChatGPT with iMessage introduces potential risks, such as prompt injection or possible third-party breaches of iMessage security. Apple’s attempts to prohibit third-party applications from accessing or bridging iMessage’s architecture have led to speculation that their motives might be aimed at eliminating competition. For instance, when Beeper reverse-engineered components of iMessage to develop Beeper Mini, an Android-compatible iMessage application, Apple quickly modified its architecture to render the app nonfunctional.
As Bloomberg pointed out, Apple’s forthcoming Siri AI serves as a direct competitor. Apple has a financial incentive to restrict OpenAI from entering its domain, especially in light of the ongoing lawsuit.
The complaint from Apple states, “At every level, from members of its Technical Staff to its Chief Hardware Officer, and in coordination with business partners, OpenAI has been stealing Apple’s trade secrets and confidential information.”
