Charging All New Users for App Sign-Up: X’s New Proposal

Spread the love

As X anticipates a significant financial loss for 2024, the company is actively exploring innovative strategies to enhance its revenue streams. One possibility on the table involves implementing a fee for new users to create accounts on the platform, which could fundamentally change the user acquisition model.

According to a report by Fortune, X is contemplating charging new users a fee of $8 to register on the platform, which could significantly impact its growth trajectory.

In detail, Fortune elaborates:

Under this proposed plan, which may roll out as early as February, new users would need to pay $8 for signing up on X. This fee would also include a complimentary month of X Premium, a subscription service priced at $7 per month, offering users a coveted “verified” checkmark badge.”

Moreover, Fortune reports insights from X’s owner, Elon Musk, indicating that charging more users could be the only viable pathway to achieving profitability for the platform.

This initiative would serve as an expansion of a trial X conducted in select regions in 2023, where it charged new users just $1 to create an account. During that period, X claimed this was a strategy to combat bot accounts rather than a revenue-generating tactic, aiming to make bot account creation less economically viable.

However, the current approach is designed to actively generate revenue. By charging new users, X aims to secure immediate income while simultaneously encouraging the uptake of X Premium, which offers a range of enticing features for subscribers.

Should potential users be motivated by this offering, it could significantly alter the platform’s financial landscape.

Despite initial optimism, X Premium has not gained the traction that Elon Musk anticipated when he took over the platform. His ambitious vision aimed to decrease dependency on advertising revenue while alleviating the pressures of advertiser demands regarding content moderation.

Initially, Musk projected that subscription income would constitute over 50% of X’s total revenue, forecasting that more than 69 million users would subscribe to X Premium by 2025.

To date, however, fewer than 2 million users have signed up for the service, making it a marginal contributor to revenue. Currently, approximately 90% of X’s income is still derived from advertising.

Additionally, X hoped that its AI chatbot “Grok” would attract more users to X Premium. Unfortunately, this strategy has not succeeded, especially with competitors like Meta providing their own AI chatbots at no cost within their platforms, diminishing the unique selling proposition of Grok.

Recognizing this challenge, X recently made Grok available for free to all users, acknowledging that it wasn’t significantly boosting X Premium subscriptions, although access to Grok’s complete features still requires payment.

Faced with a lack of compelling incentives to drive interest in its subscription services, X is now investigating alternative methods to encourage users to experience its Premium tools while simultaneously generating additional revenue.

This strategy could also act as a deterrent against bot creators, but it may have significant repercussions on user growth, as fewer individuals might be willing to try the app under a paid model.

With X’s user base stagnating (remaining at around 250 million daily active users since November 2022) and even witnessing declines in certain areas, this represents a potentially risky strategy.

Nonetheless, if X firmly believes that X Premium offers genuine value and appeal, pushing more users to engage with it might not only enhance revenue but also foster user growth in the long run.

Interestingly, there are indications that X Premium does possess some attractiveness, at least in specific contexts.

In the lead-up to the Christmas season, X offered substantial discounts on X Premium, resulting in a notable surge in subscriptions.

Increased engagement with its additional features could help bolster the overall appeal of X Premium. However, the initial allure of the blue checkmark has diminished, as it no longer signifies importance or recognition in the same way it once did.

Perhaps the other features will be sufficient to attract more users, especially if they are compelled to explore them. There’s speculation that X might eventually consider implementing subscription fees for all users to access the platform.

While many users might abandon the platform, X might only require a small percentage of its existing audience to maintain a profitable operation.

Regardless, X continues to navigate its path toward profitability, as advertisers remain hesitant to invest in the platform.
