The seemingly simple shopping list for your arcade cabinet project can quickly expand.
Alongside the cabinet, display, and computer, you may need additional components such as monitor mounting hardware, a microSD card or SSD for storage, an amplifier with speakers, a power strip, various cables, cooling fans, and a method for accessing the cabinet later without damaging your setup. You can enhance your machine’s aesthetics with artwork, illuminated marquees, T-molding, and coin doors, all of which can be added once the primary assembly is complete.
For example, Game Room Solutions provides a glimpse into how quickly costs can accumulate for even a modest build. A basic bartop cabinet is priced at $129.99, while a bundle for a two-player joystick, buttons, wiring, and USB encoder costs $44.99. Adding a speaker and amplifier package brings the total to $29.99. If you include a $65 Raspberry Pi 5 with 2GB of memory, your total approaches $270, excluding the display, storage, power supply, cables, or decorative elements.
By reusing existing hardware, you can significantly change the overall cost. Utilizing an old monitor and computer can eliminate two substantial expenses, and crafting a DIY enclosure can be more economical than a CNC-cut kit. if you opt to buy all components brand new, a full-size custom cabinet could easily surpass $1,000, even without luxurious additions.
The question arises: Is it more cost-effective to build your arcade cabinet rather than buy a pre-made one? The answer varies. The most economical approach involves utilizing reusable hardware or building the enclosure yourself. The primary advantage of this route is having complete control over the screen, games, controls, and internal hardware.
Another critical consideration involves ROMs. MAME advises users to seek licensed software, utilize ROM sets that are available for free non-commercial use, or extract data from arcade PCBs they own.
Currently, Arcade1Up offers its Pac-Man Deluxe model at a price of $499.99.
