Brian Wilson: A Clear Sign of Pop Music’s Spirituality

Spread the love

Over two decades ago, Kristen Bell and Adam Scott first crossed paths when he made a guest appearance on her acclaimed teen detective series, “Veronica Mars.” Since that initial meeting, they have shared screen time in several beloved comedies, including “Party Down,” “Parks & Recreation,” and “The Good Place.” Their camaraderie has blossomed to the point where Scott’s teenage daughter even babysits Bell’s children, showcasing the deep bond they’ve forged over the years.

As Bell reflects on the nuances of friendships among actors, she shares, “Here’s the thing with actors who are friends or see each other socially: It all blends together.” During their recent dinner conversation, she humorously notes, “I don’t know if that was just a scene or if we were genuinely at dinner.” This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the blurred lines between their personal and professional lives, highlighting how intertwined their journeys have become.

Responding with a playful quip, Scott adds, “Were we shooting that?” This light-hearted exchange showcases their chemistry and comfortable rapport as they dive into discussions about their latest projects. Currently, Bell is starring in “No One Wants This,” a romantic comedy revolving around an agnostic sex podcaster who unexpectedly falls for a charismatic rabbi. Meanwhile, Scott stars in the critically acclaimed series “Severance,” where he portrays a white-collar employee undergoing a unique medical procedure to separate his work and home lives completely, creating a fascinating premise that explores identity and self-awareness.

Kristen Bell: Our journey began on “Veronica Mars,” and we reunited on “Party Down.” Reflecting on our time together brings back fond memories of our initial collaboration and the evolution of our friendship through various projects.

Adam Scott: My role in “Veronica Mars” came about because I was friends with Angelique Jackson, Rob Thomas, Dan Etheridge, and John Enbom, the creators of “Party Down”. They reached out to me after “Veronica Mars” was canceled, leading to exciting new opportunities.

Bell: [Feigns surprise] It’s canceled?! The surprise of cancellation always stings, but it opens the door for new beginnings and creative explorations.

Scott: I’m so sorry. Can we take a moment? We might need a bit more time. Let’s take a breather. The challenges of the industry often lead to humorous moments like these.

Bell: That’s perfectly fine. Moving on! It’s fascinating how our timelines have intertwined, leading us to where we are today.

Scott: Around 2008, we started creating the show, and that’s when you came on board. It’s incredible to think how long we’ve known each other and our professional journey together.

Bell: That role was actually one of my favorites! When people ask me about my favorite character, it’s a challenge. (A) I can’t think spontaneously like that; and (b) I don’t constantly reflect on my favorite roles at home, so I often find myself without an answer. However, if I were to think about it, Uda from “Party Down” would definitely be my pick because her stoicism and sharpness set her apart in a way that was truly spectacular.

Scott: I clearly remember when you came to join us. I hadn’t seen you since “Veronica Mars,” and I was palpably nervous during the episode. I’m completely serious. The anticipation of working together again brought back a rush of emotions.

Bell: Why were you nervous?

Scott: Because it had been so long since we last worked together! I remember feeling that nervousness, and it helped me channel that energy into my character since Uda is such a force of nature.

Bell: I understand what you mean about feeling uneasy around certain people. You’re very comfortable for me, so I wouldn’t say I’m nervous. However, when I meet other actors, even those I consider friends, I still feel the pressure because they are people I admire from television. I’ve never mentioned this before, but it’s true: I get nervous and excited when meeting individuals who have made an impact on my screen.

Scott: For those who grow up in Los Angeles or around the entertainment industry, their familiarity with celebrity culture gives them an advantage over the rest of us. In contrast, for someone like me, appearing on television or film felt as improbable as traveling to the moon. I still feel a sense of excitement and trepidation when on set.

This moment reminds me that it might be a good time for you to officially apologize for the numerous voicemails you and Dax [Bell’s husband] have left me?

Bell: I would try, but I’m not that skilled of an actor!

Many episodes of “Severance” end with cliffhangers that are so intense that I can’t fathom how anyone expects to sleep after watching. Consequently, Dax and I often react by leaving you lengthy, detailed, unedited voice memos to express our thoughts, especially when we admire or are frustrated by someone’s work—like yours!

Scott: I certainly appreciate that. I’ve saved all of them. They’re both hilarious and incredibly flattering, yet also oddly insulting at times.

Bell: One of my favorites was when Dax practically screamed into the voicemail, “Hey, Adam. Kristen just fell out of a two-story window. I bet you’d like to know how she’s doing. I’ll tell you next week!” That was priceless.

Scott: Or the message you guys left while we were in the midst of filming Season 2, asking, “Hey, just curious—are you guys filming this one minute per week? Why is it taking so long?”

Bell: Give us the show!

Scott: Because you left that message, it’s now going to take seven years for the next season to come out.

Bell: Your show has the ability to elicit a genuine response from my family, as my kids are fans as well.

Scott: Oh, they watch it?

Bell: They absolutely love it! Did you ever anticipate that “Severance” would become the phenomenon it is today?

Scott: Not at all! In fact, I was particularly anxious because it felt so surreal. I personally loved the concept, but you never know how something will resonate with audiences until it’s released. We were merely hoping that people would enjoy it and find its quirky nature appealing. When it became as successful as it did in Season 1, it truly exceeded our expectations and was a delightful surprise.

Bell: What was your reaction when you read the scene where your work self and home self finally come face-to-face?

Scott: When you come across something like that, you instantly start dreading it.

Bell: Did that make you anxious?

Scott: Absolutely! I was terrified to film that scene.

Bell: Why is that?

Scott: I just saw it as an opportunity to potentially mess things up and go too far with the performance.

Bell: Don’t speak about my friend like that! I thought it was one of the most brilliant sequences I’ve ever seen.

Scott: We should turn the spotlight on your show.

Bell: Why would we do that?

Scott: Because “No One Wants This” is fantastic! You and Adam Brody have a palpable chemistry. The term “chemistry” is often overused since it generalizes something that either works or doesn’t and is incredibly unique. Sometimes it’s forced, and the audience can’t tell, leading them to assume that talent is evident.

Bell: Sometimes you can’t stand the person, yet you read like you have amazing chemistry. Isn’t that strange?

Scott: It is peculiar! However, with you and Adam, there’s something crackly and special about your connection. You both know each other well.

Bell: We’ve been in mutual friend circles since our twenties. He was on “The O.C.” while I was on “Veronica Mars,” and he dated a close friend of mine. So, I always thought I knew him—mainly because we occasionally found ourselves at his apartment when he wasn’t around. Then we worked together in the film “Some Girl(s),” and he played my love interest on “House of Lies.” I was eight months pregnant during that shoot, and we had a memorable scene, which he humorously refers to as our “threesome.”

Scott: Oh, wow! That’s hilarious!

Bell: It was quite the experience! He has always been a joy to watch on screen. His choices are often unconventional, and he’s incredibly unpredictable, making him a vibrant presence.

When I read “No One Wants This,” I was convinced it had to be Adam, and I expressed that to everyone involved. They were surprised, saying, “Adam Brody, huh? We hadn’t considered him,” but I insisted, “Please trust me.” I later showed the producers a tape of Adam and me working together, realizing that there was something about our dynamic that worked beautifully on screen.

Scott: That’s interesting, especially since you hadn’t done anything quite like this together before. It’s fascinating how intuition plays a role in casting.

One compelling aspect of this project is the focus on an interfaith relationship.

Bell: Adam’s character, Noah, is a rabbi with a unique upbringing. He aspires to be the chief rabbi; it’s a fundamental part of his identity. In contrast, my character is agnostic, lacking strong beliefs. Their connection is profound and transcends their differences, leaving both of them bewildered because they feel a strong attraction despite their contrasting beliefs.

What I find incredibly intriguing is how adaptable this narrative is. You could substitute any belief system here—be it Christianity or paganism—demonstrating that we often limit ourselves to narrow perspectives. Without sounding too preachy, the truth is we are all human beings striving to do our best in a complex world.
