After extensive testing and multiple refinements over the past year, Instagram has officially introduced its innovative “Blend” feature for Reels. This exciting update empowers users to establish a shared feed of curated Reels, allowing them to connect with friends or group chats in a more engaging way.
These example screens illustrate how users can create a Blend feed, which is then sent out as an invitation via direct message (DM). This added functionality makes sharing Reels with friends not only simpler but also more interactive.
The Blend feed will present a unique combination of Reels tailored to the interests of each participant, showcasing suggestions based on the individual preferences and activities of each member.
“Discover who each Reel is recommended for, based on the activity of each participant on Instagram, including their interactions with various Reels.”
Rather than individually sharing Reels with one another—a method that has become increasingly common within the app—the Blend feed consolidates all the Reels that each user would typically see into a single, cohesive stream. This enhances the user experience by streamlining the sharing process.
Furthermore, the Blend feed will dynamically adjust to reflect the evolving interests of the group based on the Reels shared within the chat, thereby promoting a more personalized experience.
As shown in the last image, this new feature aims to foster increased interaction around common interests. Users can easily browse through recommended Reels at any time, allowing for comments such as: “This reel is sooo you.” This encourages a more engaging atmosphere within chats.
When chat members react or comment on a Reel, it generates notifications within the chat, stimulating further conversation and engagement among users.
Essentially, Blend is an initiative aimed at enhancing sharing behaviors, capitalizing on the recent surge in DM activity and the popularity of Reels. This approach formalizes a communal experience, eliminating the need for users to continually send their favorite Reels to one another.
While this could prove effective, it does seem to shift the focus towards a more collaborative experience. However, many users currently prefer to share specific highlights with individual friends rather than providing a full stream of what they see on the platform.
For instance, you may have diverse interests influencing your Instagram feed, such as a friend who enjoys dog Reels, another who is passionate about DIY projects, and yet another who follows fitness tips. With Blend, all these varied interests will be integrated into any Blend feed you create, but it may feel less personal than directly sharing each specific Reel as a curated gift.
Offering everyone a view of a complete stream may diminish the personal touch and engagement that comes from targeted sharing.
Nonetheless, this could be a promising development, and Instagram appears enthusiastic about the potential it brings.
Creating your own Blend feed is simple. Just select the Blend icon at the top of any DM chat on Instagram, and invite your friends to join in on the fun!
