Ariana Grande Opens Up About Her Vocal Range and the Misunderstandings Surrounding It
Ariana Grande is addressing ongoing accusations about her vocal changes, once again clarifying her unique sound and vocal technique.
The talented 31-year-old singer and actress recently discussed why some critics believe she alters her voice during an appearance on the Smartless podcast.
“The aspect of my technique that seems to confuse people is quite amusing. If you are someone who regularly uses their voice, you understand that during a long day of press or performances, I might position [my voice] slightly higher,” she explained to hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Canadian actor Will Arnett.

“I will adjust my vocal placement to protect my voice,” Grande shared, emphasizing the importance of vocal care.
“But that’s simply a standard practice for vocalists. It’s merely a slight pitch adjustment,” she continued. “People often say, ‘That’s not her natural voice,’ but I assure you it is. It’s just pitched a bit higher. Every aspect of it is natural,” she asserted passionately.
She remarked, “It’s quite humorous because I’ve addressed this countless times, and people still ask, ‘Where’s your actual voice?’ I reply, ‘All of them are my real voice.’”

This isn’t the first time that Grande — who has recently received an Academy Award nomination for her role as Glinda in Wicked— has found herself defending her vocal style.
In June 2024, a clip showcasing her vocal shifts went viral from her discussion on actor Penn Badgley’s Podcrushed podcast.
The video demonstrates Grande transitioning from a lower-pitched tone to a higher pitch, igniting comments on TikTok like, “I don’t even know what her real voice sounds like anymore.”
The TikTok post, which has garnered millions of views, eventually reached Grande herself, prompting her to respond to concerns about her vocal transformations.
“It’s a matter of behavior (talking like this for two years) and maintaining vocal health. I intentionally change my vocal placement (high/low) depending on how much singing I’m doing. I’ve always done this, bye,” she wrote, addressing her critics directly.
