Apple recently unveiled the latest AirPods 5 during the much-anticipated launch event for the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pros, and Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. My brief experience with these new wireless earbuds revealed impressive audio quality. Having previously used the AirPods 4, which featured active noise cancellation (ANC), I found that the AirPods 5 maintain a similar design and comfort level.
The AirPods 5 are available in two configurations, both equipped with ANC. In contrast to the previous AirPods 4, which offered models with and without ANC, the pricing is quite appealing. At $129, you can purchase the AirPods 5 without a wireless charging case, while for $149, you can get the version that includes the case. This pricing is notably $30 lower than the AirPods 4 equipped with ANC and a wireless charging case. Given the trend of rising prices for electronic devices, especially with last year’s iPhones, this pricing structure presents excellent value. The higher-priced model not only supports wireless charging, compatible with any Qi charger or the Apple Watch charging puck, but also features a built-in speaker for the Find My app to aid in locating misplaced earbuds. it lacks Precision Finding due to the absence of Ultra Wideband support.
There are additional distinctions between the two models. The AirPods 5 with the wireless charging case offers 5 hours of battery life with ANC activated, providing an extra hour compared to the base version. this model includes swipe controls on the earbuds’ stems for convenient volume adjustments.

Apple claims that the ANC technology in both models of the AirPods 5 is 1.5 times more effective than that of the AirPods 4 featuring ANC. During my testing, while in a room filled with HomePods simulating the sound of airplane engines, the AirPods 5 efficiently reduced background noise, although not completely. A direct comparison between the AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 equipped with ANC was not possible, so I cannot provide specific insights into the extent of the improvements. they appeared to perform admirably for wireless earbuds without in-ear tips. For those who prefer not to use in-ear tips due to comfort issues, the enhanced ANC capabilities of the AirPods 5 will be a welcomed feature. If you seek the ultimate in ANC performance from Apple’s wireless earbuds, the AirPods Pro 3 still hold the top spot.

In terms of audio quality, the AirPods 5 seem to deliver enhanced bass responses with noticeably less distortion compared to the AirPods 4. Apple confirms these improvements, stating that the AirPods 5 also offer richer midrange frequencies, which should enhance vocal clarity. To fully assess the audio fidelity, I would need to listen to a wider selection of tracks on Apple Music.
Another positive aspect is that all AirPods 4 cases are compatible with both versions of the AirPods 5. This means if you already own a preferred accessory, there is no need to purchase a new one.
A comprehensive review of the AirPods 5 featuring the wireless charging case will be available shortly. Keep an eye out for updates.
