Do American Idol Contestants Get Paid for Being on the Show?
Contestants do not receive payment until they reach the live rounds. Former participant Margie Mays confirmed this in a 2020 TikTok video.
“You don’t get paid until you make it to the live rounds,” Margie explained. “I also did a couple of commercials for [American Idol], and that stuff is paid. When they take you to places like Hawaii, obviously, they pay for that, and there are things like a per diem for eating while you’re in Hawaii. But they’re not paying you to be a contestant.”
- Contestants cover their expenses during auditions.
- Only live-round participants receive compensation.
Margie confirmed that the show covers hotel, meal, and travel expenses during Hollywood Week.
“They’re not paying you money, but they are paying for your expenses,” she pointed out.
What Do Contestants Earn in the Live Rounds?
Contestants who reach the Top 24 can earn significant amounts per episode. They must first pay a $3,000 sign-up fee to join the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA).
Once signed up, contestants can earn:
| Episode Duration | Earnings |
|---|---|
| Two-hour show | $1,571 |
| One-hour episode | $1,303 |
| Half-hour episode | $910 |
How Much Money Do American Idol Winners Get?
Currently, American Idol winners receive a cash prize of $250,000. However, season 16 winner Maddie Poppe revealed the reality behind this amount.
“You do get $250,000, but not really because of taxes,” Maddie told Business Insider in 2022. “You get half of it before you complete your record, and then the second half after you complete the record. So, it’s just like an advance from the record deal, but I’m pretty sure I have to recoup it.”
- Winners receive cash in two installments.
- Taxes significantly reduce the actual amount received.
In the early seasons, winners were promised up to $1 million. However, Kelly Clarkson clarified this in a 2026 episode of her talk show.
“They were like, ‘Oh you win a million dollars or whatever, da da da,’” Kelly explained. “No, you didn’t. They lied. You did not, no. It was like a million dollars’ worth of investment in you.”
What Year Did Kelly Clarkson Win American Idol?
Kelly is the season 1 winner of American Idol, which aired in 2002.
