Songs that utilize generative AI as a tool will still be permitted.
The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has declared that tracks entirely created by AI will be excluded from the country’s music charts. According to the updated Code of Practice, songs that incorporate generative AI may be included in the charts if they are “substantially human-made” and do not raise any concerns regarding streaming or chart manipulation. These regulations will take effect starting this Friday. Tracks that do not meet these criteria will also be ineligible for ARIA Awards.
“The ARIA Charts will continue to be a transparent reflection of the music that Australians enjoy, but a chart that recognizes unlicensed AI-generated music would undermine the foundation of recorded music that we aim to celebrate,” stated ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd. “We urge all stakeholders involved in determining the music played and promoted to Australian audiences, especially radio, to champion human creativity and adopt similar policies in their own frameworks.”
This decision aligns with a broader movement within the global recording industry. ARIA’s new guidelines reflect the recommendations concerning AI usage recently issued by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) in July. last month, a consortium of major record labels advocated for charting organizations to ban the inclusion of AI-generated content. This initiative garnered support from industry giants, including Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group.
