Instagram’s New Policy Targets AI-Generated Profiles
Instagram is implementing significant changes to its policies regarding profiles that feature AI-generated personas. The platform now mandates that these accounts clearly display a new “AI-generated profile” label. This label distinguishes accounts showcasing AI content from those representing real humans. Failure to use this label will result in reduced visibility for such accounts, according to the company’s announcement.
This decision comes amid a broader movement across various platforms to minimize the visibility of AI-generated content, as social media users increasingly express their frustration with the overwhelming presence of low-quality AI material. While other companies have taken steps to limit AI content, Meta has been relatively lenient, often promoting user-generated content. This latest policy shift does not constitute a broad crackdown on all AI content but focuses specifically on profiles that may mislead users.
The newly introduced labels are specifically designed for accounts that display AI-generated personas. Previously, Instagram offered an optional “AI creator” label that served as a catch-all for profiles that frequently included AI content. The platform is now replacing this with a more precise “AI-generated profile” tag aimed explicitly at profiles that feature AI-generated individuals, as noted in its in-app description.
As AI technology advances, the creation of convincing AI content has surged, leading to an increase in deceptive AI influencers. Notably, The Guardian recently reported on a growing number of AI-generated influencers promoting apps and brands. Similarly, The New York Times identified hundreds of AI “wellness” influencers, some even posing as medical professionals. Although much of this content does not overtly violate Meta’s policies, it raises significant concerns about the potential for spreading misinformation.
An Instagram spokesperson stated, “We’ve heard from our community that they don’t appreciate encountering a profile that appears human, only to discover later that the person is AI-generated.” The spokesperson also mentioned that accounts featuring AI-generated individuals without the appropriate label “may soon face limitations on their reach.” Creators who believe they have been unfairly penalized can appeal through Instagram’s Account Status dashboard.
