His recent statements highlight a growing trend toward AI-generated content, which is poised to become an integral part of the social media experience. Meta’s ongoing development of generative AI elements, including customizable AI avatars, supports this vision, suggesting a future where digital representations of creators play a central role in online interactions.

In a similar vein, TikTok appears to be following suit by potentially integrating AI avatars into its platform. This development is hinted at through the latest updates to Douyin, the Chinese iteration of TikTok, which could soon mirror these advancements.

According to reports from AIbase, Douyin is actively working on an innovative project dubbed the “V Project.” This initiative aims to push the limits of live streaming and user interaction, indicating a strategic shift towards enhanced user engagement and dynamic content creation.

The primary focus of the “V Project” centers around the AI Avatar feature. This groundbreaking technology empowers creators to generate virtual avatars that authentically reflect their personality and thought processes. As a result, these avatars can maintain 24/7 engagement with users, allowing them to gain insights and suggestions from creators in real time, even when the creators are offline.

This innovative approach closely resembles Meta’s evolving virtual avatar model, which was prominently featured at their recent Connect event, showcasing their commitment to advancing avatar technology in the social media landscape.

However, it’s essential to note that Douyin has a significant advantage in this arena, having established a robust framework for utilizing virtual avatars effectively.

For some time now, Douyin has enabled virtual avatars, with many users successfully hosting continuous shopping live streams within the app, showcasing their prowess in engaging audiences through these digital representations.

Currently, there are over 993,000 registered digital avatar companies in China, specializing in the cost-effective production of virtual characters capable of streaming continuously across various applications. Numerous trends originating from the Chinese market have struggled to gain traction in the U.S., with the integration of shopping features on TikTok being a notable example. Considering this context, it seems plausible that virtual avatars may not achieve widespread popularity; nevertheless, Meta appears confident in the potential consumer interest in engaging with AI representations of real influencers across various applications.

However, I remain skeptical about the long-term appeal of this trend.

No matter how sophisticated AI bots become, they remain artificial entities, incapable of replicating the genuine human connections that have long defined the essence of social apps. While some individuals engage with ChatGPT for brainstorming and thought clarification, the idea of replacing real interactions with bots appears less engaging and may only hold initial novelty value.

The intrinsic appeal of social media lies in the ability to interact with real individuals; for instance, tagging a celebrity in a post could lead to a genuine response. This dynamic diminishes when bots are introduced to respond on behalf of others, resulting in a homogenized experience that equates to conversing with machines rather than engaging with real people.

I am uncertain if users will embrace this shift, regardless of how lifelike these bots may become.

Nonetheless, it appears that the trend toward increased AI bot interaction is gaining momentum, with more applications exploring ways to incorporate these interactive features.

Perhaps there is more underlying value in this trend than it initially appears. Users may be increasingly enamored with the pursuit of likes, followers, and engagement, potentially diminishing their concern over whether interactions stem from real individuals or AI representations.

However, after years of user dissatisfaction regarding bots and automated responses across social media platforms, I question whether rebranding them as more sophisticated, celebrity-like avatars will genuinely address these concerns.
