Avoid Celebrating AI Appreciation Day: Here’s Why
On July 16, AI Appreciation Day arrives, leaving many to ponder the necessity of such an observance. This day, like other quirky marketing creations such as National Hot Dog Day or National Doughnut Day, lacks substantial significance. While it aims to highlight “the most consequential technology in human history,” the reality is that AI’s profound impact on various sectors doesn’t justify dedicating an entire day to its appreciation.
The official suggestions for celebrating AI Appreciation Day include actions like expressing gratitude to someone involved in AI development, engaging in discussions about AI with skeptics or children, and signing a pledge to acknowledge the day. Although these suggestions may seem humorous, they are presented as genuine recommendations.
Rather than focusing on AI, we should prioritize celebrating human experiences. Instead of placing artificial intelligence at the forefront of our attention, consider supporting local artists by purchasing their work, enjoying a swim in a natural body of water before it faces the consequences of AI-driven data centers, or reconnecting with friends instead of spending time with an AI chatbot. These meaningful activities deserve our appreciation on July 16, far more than AI itself.
