Activate Side-Swiping Likes and Replies for X Users Now

The platform X is shifting its strategy by adopting a more cautious stance regarding the elimination of in-stream post function buttons. This nuanced approach might very well turn out to be one of the most beneficial updates introduced in recent times, granting users more control over their interaction with content.

Today, X engineer May Ly announced that iOS users can now activate side-swiping options for liking and replying to posts directly via their app settings. This enhancement not only streamlines user interaction but also enriches the overall experience on the platform.

As showcased in the video, users are now empowered to enable side-swiping functions, which can be found under the “Timeline” settings. This feature allows for a more dynamic and engaging way to interact with content, making it easier for users to express their reactions and responses.

Additionally, users have the option to hide engagement buttons and the corresponding interaction counts beneath each post, providing a cleaner look for those who prefer a more minimalistic feed.

X is not enforcing this new functionality as a mandatory change to the user interface, contrary to earlier expectations, including statements from owner Elon Musk. Rather, they are offering users the flexibility to opt-in to this feature, which may encourage its gradual adoption over time.

Another intriguing aspect is that users can customize the actions performed by their side-swipes. For instance, a right-swipe can be designated as a bookmarking option, or users can choose to have no action associated with it at all, allowing for deeper personalization of their interaction with the platform.

This thoughtful approach signifies a shift from Musk’s typical implementation style, which often favors quick and sweeping changes in the app’s functionality.

Back in March, Musk reiterated a plan to eliminate all function buttons and engagement counts from the timeline to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the interface.

This would result in posts appearing in a much cleaner format, devoid of distractions that could detract from the content itself.

X without engagement counts

However, many users expressed concerns regarding this approach, suggesting that it could lead to decreased interaction rates and potentially confuse new users unfamiliar with the platform’s engagement methods.

Despite these concerns, Musk appeared resolute in pursuing this plan with the hope of improving the overall aesthetics of the feed, aligning with his vision for a more streamlined experience.

Now, it appears that X has reconsidered its previous strategy, opting for a more user-friendly and intuitive solution that encourages active participation without overwhelming users.

Does this mean that the eventual removal of engagement buttons and counts is off the table? Not necessarily. This update could simply be a stepping stone towards that goal, fostering user habits that will inform future decisions about interface changes.

While it remains uncertain whether many users will choose to enable these side-swiping options, the introduction of such a feature presents an intriguing alternative for enhancing user experience on the platform.

If X decides to follow through with its original plan to remove buttons entirely, it retains the flexibility to implement those changes in the future, ensuring that user feedback is incorporated into its development strategy.
