Death, taxes, and Nebraska finding a way to lose a one-possession game.
It appears that the Huskers have not recovered from last year’s woes, where they went 3-9, having lost every game (but the Ohio State loss) by one-score, and even that one against the Buckeyes was a winnable game for Scott Frost’s team.
One of Nebraska’s sole wins of 2021 was an absolute drubbing of Northwestern, and the season started anew as the Huskers played again in Week 0, this time taking on the Wildcats in Dublin, Ireland. Last year, the Huskers were surprised by a very mediocre Illinois team in Week 0, but would history repeat itself in 2022?
Nebraska looked dominant to start the game, but after going up by 11 early in the second-half, Frost elected to go for an onside kick. Northwestern recovered and scored, cutting the lead to just four. Texas transfer quarterback Casey Thompson lost much of his first-half mojo, as Nebraska, even with new faces, managed to melt down all the same, losing to Northwestern, 31-28.
Of course, the media had a field day with the loss, mocking the former UCF coach and his team in Lincoln for putting the same ole Huskers on the field. Check out some of the best tweets below.

The good news is with all that free beer the Nebraska fans who made the trip won’t remember the second half.

It feels like Scott Frost is finished at Nebraska. Brutal for Cornhusker fans. They traveled like crazy to Ireland for this. Tough to watch.

I may be mistaken but I think the Huskers doing the onside kick for no apparent reason up 11 after scoring 2 quick TD’s and totally capturing the momentum in this game will be a course study in things not to do while up 11 and gaining momentum in football rooms everywhere.

Scott Frost may have to become an Irish citizen. Not sure he gets let back on the plane home lol.

I’ve defended Scott Frost more than once, but that onside kick was too risky. Had momentum. Just felt like he was trying to outsmart the room.

They led by 11 twice (!) in today’s game and blew it. I feel so bad for Nebraska fans. This is such a painful way to lose over and over. https://t.co/fHR8L3ESf9

Nebraska is the first Power 5 team to lose 9 straight 1-possession games since Iowa State from 2014-16. Huskers are now 5-21 in one score games under Frost. Just insane.

We are one game into the season and a fan base is melting down. Glorious.

Clearly that was a trap game for Nebraska. Looking past Northwestern with North Dakota next week.

Nebraska goes:
TD
forced fumble
TDLead 28-17.
Then onside kick.
Lose 31-28.
One decision may not get you fired. But it can accelerate the process. #Huskers

I’d like to introduce Alabama’s new passing game analyst for the Iron Bowl: Scott Frost.

Apart from offensive style and a new QB (who def made his share of plays), very little has changed at Nebraska.

For a guy whose last name is Frost, his seat sure is pretty hot.

Credit Scott Frost for his consistency. He falls to 5-21 in one-score games. Critical special teams moment changes the game. Plays the “same movie” from Week 0 in 2021 against Illinois.

We’re not that far away from Rutgers fans complaining about the Big Ten lowering its standards and allowing a school like Nebraska to join the conference.

Adam Rittenberg
An on-brand loss for Scott Frost and #Huskers, with turnovers and a confounding special teams decision. Casey Thompson was great for most of the way but result is painfully familiar. You just can’t win like this in the Big Ten.
