Foodborne Illness Outbreak Linked to Potluck Event
While 19 people were confirmed hospitalized with food-related illnesses, reports indicate that up to 30 individuals required medical evaluation. Emergency responders noted that at least 80 employees may have been affected overall. The troubling situation reportedly began after a potluck meal held at the Walmart distribution center in Tennessee.
Emergency Calls Made by Concerned Employees
Released 911 recordings revealed that one employee reported another person experiencing severe vomiting and fatigue in the bathroom. Another caller expressed concern that the illness was spreading among coworkers, stating, “…currently sitting at 28 affected associates, and we have at least four that are very ill,” according to WTVF. A second ambulance was dispatched to assist at the scene.
One caller suggested that the illness might stem from “homemade rice that was brought into the facility.” However, health officials are still conducting an investigation and have not yet confirmed if the rice was indeed the source of contamination. The Tennessee Department of Health acknowledged the ongoing investigation but has not provided specific updates regarding the cause or the food involved.
Walmart Addresses the Situation Publicly
The retail giant issued a statement regarding the incident at its Tennessee distribution center. Walmart emphasized that the illness did not originate from its products and reassured the public that there is no ongoing risk. The company is cooperating fully with health officials as the investigation unfolds, according to WTVF.
“The health and safety of our associates is a top priority. We’re working closely with local emergency management and health officials as they investigate.”
