What common traits do your favorite actors and digital creators share? Both groups possess IMDb credits, even though many digital creators may not have traditional film or television experience.
On September 9, IMDb, owned by Amazon, launched a new professional category called “Digital Creator” on both IMDb and IMDbPro. This category encompasses streamers, vloggers, video essayists, gaming creators, and influencers. A recent report from Variety highlights that having prior film or television credits is not a requirement for establishing a digital creator profile.
This development allows creators whose work primarily resides on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram to showcase their contributions alongside those of actors, producers, and casting directors—without needing a conventional entertainment role to qualify. For instance, MrBeast has notable credits, including his work on Prime Video’s Beast Games. The significant change is that creators can now create profiles based solely on their online accomplishments.
According to IMDb’s updated guidelines, Premium members can select up to three professions for their profiles. This means a creator who produces online videos, acts, and takes on producing roles can represent all those functions simultaneously.
How Can This New Category Benefit Digital Creators?
IMDb’s goal is to facilitate professional networking. CEO Nikki Santoro stated, “IMDbPro empowers entertainment professionals with tools that help them get discovered, build their reputation, and advance their careers.”
“Digital creators and their representatives require the same infrastructure, while producers, casting directors, studio executives, and brand partners need an effective way to connect with them,” Santoro elaborated.
This can streamline the process for potential collaborators to quickly grasp what a creator does. “We’re excited to introduce a category that fills this gap and provides creators with a discoverable industry profile,” she added.

Whether this increased visibility leads to job opportunities remains uncertain. this initiative aligns with a broader discussion about the evolving role of creators within the entertainment industry.
Digital creators and their representatives require the same infrastructure, while producers, casting directors, studio executives, and brand partners need an effective way to connect with them.
The transition of creators into Hollywood is not a new phenomenon. Issa Rae gained recognition through her YouTube series Awkward Black Girl before co-creating HBO’s Insecure. Quinta Brunson transitioned from viral sketches to creating and starring in Abbott Elementary, while Bo Burnham began with musical comedy on YouTube before writing and directing Eighth Grade.
“In just over a decade, content creators have transitioned from digital outliers to industry power brokers,” noted Mashable’s Crystal Bell in a May 2025 summary of creators who have crossed over into film and television. Their influence reaches beyond acting roles, as many creators are now involved in writing, directing, and developing their own projects.
This crossover has not been without skepticism. Columnist Sydney Brumfield wrote in The Ithacan that influencers’ pre-existing audiences might provide them with advantages over seasoned actors. “While casting influencers may seem financially sensible, it often leads to deserving actors being overlooked,” she argued.
The catch? A fee is involved. To select this category, users must have an IMDbPro Premium subscription. In the U.S., a standard individual membership costs $19.99 per month or $149.99 annually, plus applicable taxes. Introducing this category for creators opens up a new segment of paying subscribers for IMDb, a strategic move.
Is an IMDbPro Profile Worth the Investment for You?
Not every creator will find this service necessary. Those actively seeking representation or production collaborations may see clearer benefits from having a profile. For creators focused on sponsorships and building direct relationships with brands, the decision will hinge on whether those partners utilize IMDb as a resource for talent acquisition.
Under the “Digital Creator” category, users can choose from six sub-professions:
-
Streamer
-
Vlogger
-
Video Essayist
-
Video Creator
-
Gaming Creator
-
Influencer
As creators increasingly influence the entertainment landscape, the industry is taking note and exploring new ways to integrate them. IMDb’s introduction of this category represents another step toward recognizing careers cultivated online and providing potential collaborators with more avenues to connect. The future will reveal how valuable this change ultimately proves.
