As the new Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope embarks on its journey into deep space, the public has the chance to track its three-month voyage in near-real time through NASA‘s online tracker.

The spacecraft successfully launched on Sunday, Aug. 30, from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. It is now on its own path toward its designated orbit, located approximately 1 million miles from Earth.

Roman is heading toward a location known as the second sun–Earth Lagrange Point, or L2. This gravitational sweet spot, positioned beyond the orbit of the moon, allows the telescope to maintain a wide and stable view of the cosmos, unobstructed by the Earth’s atmosphere.

Throughout this extended journey, the team enters a phase known as commissioning. This phase involves a meticulous process where engineers and scientists activate systems incrementally, adjust settings, and calibrate instruments prior to the telescope commencing full scientific operations. Although NASA has established a timeline for this process, the schedule is flexible and depends on the spacecraft’s performance.

On Monday, mission controllers executed the first “mid‑course correction burn,” a three-minute engine ignition that adjusted Roman’s trajectory for increased precision. Flight planners have incorporated two of these correction opportunities early in the mission. Minimizing the use of these burns is advantageous; conserving fuel reserves directly extends the telescope’s operational lifespan. Once Roman establishes its looping orbit around L2, mission controllers will activate thrusters roughly every 28 days to maintain the spacecraft’s position.

From its vantage point at L2, Roman will utilize a wide-field camera capable of capturing an area of the sky approximately 100 times larger than a standard Hubble image, all while preserving Hubble-grade clarity. This extensive coverage enables Roman to map billions of galaxies, tens of thousands of planets, and countless supernovae.

Mission leaders estimate that Roman will generate around 1.4 terabytes of data daily. During its planned five-year prime mission, the observatory will continually transmit a wealth of images and measurements. NASA intends to make these data sets publicly available without delay.

NASA anticipates releasing the first detailed images from space around December and initiating its surveys in January 2027.
