Helen Mirren takes on the role of the iconic novelist Patricia Highsmith in A Talent for Murder, and the newly released trailer captivates our attention.
Under the direction of Anton Corbijn and the screenplay by Joanna Murray-Smith, the film features Alden Ehrenreich (Weapons, Solo) as Edward Ridgeway. He is dispatched by his New York publisher to Switzerland with the aim of persuading the author of The Talented Mr Ripley to create one final masterpiece in her pivotal Ripley series. Complicating matters, another representative from the publisher has already embarked on this mission, yet no one has heard from him since. As the trailer reveals, Highsmith’s residence is surrounded by an alarming number of guns and knives.
Highsmith plans to give Ridgeway one evening to demonstrate his ability to “inhabit the mind of a killer” before she commits any ideas to paper. Their interaction evolves into a Highsmith-style crime writing masterclass. The first task? Identifying their subject, a stunning female lead with an equally captivating name — Clementine Harriet Balfour (House of the Dragon‘s Olivia Cooke) — who is poised to inherit significant wealth from her great aunt.
As Ridgeway engages in Highsmith’s intricate game of deception, the ominous themes present in her literature begin to manifest in reality.
A Talent for Murder premieres in theaters on October 23.
