Recently, Nitter functioned as an open-source platform that empowered users to access posts on X without the need for an account. Many users viewed this as a necessary alternative to X, allowing them to browse content guilt-free. it appears that Nitter is now facing significant challenges.
A notice on their website states:
On August 24, 2026, cease and desist letters were issued by X Corp., demanding the immediate removal of all Nitter instances and the project’s repository.
nitter.net is currently offline, and development has halted for the time being. I am seeking legal counsel and will not provide further details for now.
I extend my gratitude to everyone who has used, hosted, packaged, donated, and contributed to Nitter over the past seven years.”
A similar message is also visible on the Nitter GitHub page, indicating that the actions taken by X have been effective. The creators of Nitter appear to have complied with the demands.
TechCrunch has reportedly reviewed one of the cease and desist letters, which accuses Nitter of “illegal use and circumvention of X’s Application Programming Interface (API) and associated data.” Furthermore, Nitter is said to be violating “various state and federal laws, including, but not limited to, the Texas Harmful Access by Computer Act (§ 143.001 and § 33.02) and the Lanham Act (15 U.S.C. §§ 1114, 1125).”
Nitter has faced closure before. Three years ago, Reddit users reported difficulties accessing the platform, though debates ensued about its actual status. ArsTechnica noted that the 2024 X/Twitter API shutdown temporarily disrupted Nitter’s functionality as well.
Interestingly, a Reddit user named Pebkachu shared on Tuesday that “a few maintainers of other instances [of Nitter] are still working diligently to keep it operational (and may be more resilient to these letters if they are located outside the US).” Thus, while Nitter’s situation is precarious, as an open-source initiative, it will not be completely extinguished unless it becomes non-functional for all users.
