Despite the strong sales of Meta’s AI glasses, rising concerns about their ability to record are prompting discussions about potential misuse and privacy implications surrounding these advanced connectivity devices.
In recent weeks:
- The non-profit organization HateAid from Germany has lodged a criminal complaint against Meta and several other smart glasses manufacturers, seeking to prohibit the sale of recording-capable devices to safeguard individual privacy, as reported by Euro News.
- The Guardian highlighted that numerous restaurants and pubs across the U.K. have opted to ban Meta glasses “to protect the privacy of their customers and staff.” Cinemas and theater chains have also imposed bans on the use of Meta glasses in their venues.
- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been instructed not to wear Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, as these devices are classified as personal body-worn cameras that are prohibited in federal workplaces, according to The New York Times.
- The Register reported that participants at DEF CON 2026 were informed of a ban on Meta glasses due to fears they could be utilized to make unauthorized recordings.
These incidents are part of a growing trend of privacy complaints associated with Meta’s glasses, which are allegedly being used to capture unauthorized recordings that may lead to criminal charges.
Recently, SMT reported on the emergence of a new market focused on modifying the device’s LED recording indicators to obscure the fact that recordings are taking place. In response, Meta has introduced an update that disables the glasses if such tampering is detected.
The negative feedback surrounding Meta’s glasses has also spurred the creation of apps designed to notify users when camera-equipped glasses are in proximity, allowing individuals to remain vigilant about potential recording activities.
According to Ars Technica, a paid application named Nearby Glasses has already been downloaded over 100,000 times.
These privacy concerns may hinder the growth of the smart glasses market, even though Meta and Snap are intent on playing significant roles in the future of these innovative devices.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that glasses represent the ultimate form of connection through AI and forecasts that glasses will eventually replace smartphones as the primary technology companions for users. Meanwhile, Snap is set to launch its Specs device next month with hopes of unlocking new opportunities in the market.
So far, Meta’s glasses have experienced strong demand, with partner EssilorLuxottica reporting in February that sales of Meta glasses nearly tripled in 2025, according to CNBC.
However, as public backlash increases, regulatory measures are expected to follow. This could lead to a slowdown in demand as consumers become increasingly cautious about the potential ramifications of using such devices.
In response, Meta is focusing on showcasing the practical benefits of these devices by distributing them to visually impaired users in the U.S. and U.K.
The success of these efforts in mitigating negative perceptions remains uncertain, and it seems increasingly likely that recording-enabled glasses will encounter restrictions in more locations.
