Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, has voiced his concerns about the current challenges faced by publishers and platforms due to Google’s search algorithms and AI Overviews. In a recent letter addressed to shareholders prior to the second-quarter earnings call, he emphasized, “People don’t want a summary of Reddit; they want Reddit.”
Huffman explicitly pointed out that Reddit has not gained from Google’s AI-driven search enhancements, despite their ongoing partnership. He stated that AI Overviews have not delivered “a similar level of positive impact” compared to traditional search methods.
Huffman remarked, “Historically, the ten blue links have provided immense value and growth to the entire ecosystem.” He referred to the effectiveness of conventional organic search results, stressing that AI Overviews have yet to create comparable benefits. This sentiment appears to resonate across various sectors, including businesses, publishers, and retailers, all of whom continue to seek a mutually beneficial solution.
These remarks come at a time when Reddit has reported a decline in search traffic over the past few months. Following a report from The Wall Street Journal, it seems the company is reconsidering its partnership with Google. Although Reddit has not officially disclosed its intentions regarding the renewal or modification of its existing $60 million licensing agreement with Google, Huffman hinted at a range of possible outcomes. “We need to evaluate every aspect of this situation to ensure we maximize value for Reddit,” he commented.
Reddit is not alone in facing difficulties amidst the evolving search environment. Numerous publishers, some of whom have also entered into licensing agreements with Google, have experienced significant drops in search traffic. This trend is attributed to Google’s prioritization of AI-generated summaries that often obscure links, along with a growing number of users opting for chatbots instead of traditional search queries. Google maintains that its AI-enhanced search features are beneficial for the industry at large.
To attract new users, Huffman mentioned that Reddit is exploring various enhancements, including improvements to feed recommendations and making the platform more user-friendly for newcomers. He also revealed that the company is considering developing “a video Reddit experience” and enabling users to “background listen” to posts.
“We observe users engaging with this concept off-platform,” he noted. “A new form of content has emerged online, akin to podcasts, where individuals narrate Reddit posts. This approach, akin to ‘listened-to’ or ‘spoken Reddit,’ could be highly engaging as well.”
