Last week’s My Adventures With Superman delivered a lighter narrative featuring Jon Kent, the time-traveling son of Clark and Lois from the future. Now, as we reach a pivotal moment in the season, it’s time to raise the stakes and intensify the drama.
Titled “The Death of Superman,” this episode draws inspiration from the iconic 1992 comic event that heavily influences the season’s narrative. In this intense showdown, Clark, Kara, and Jon confront Hank Henshaw, known as Cyborg Superman. Having escaped from Lex Luthor’s control, Henshaw is unleashed and ready to unleash his pent-up anti-alien fury on the three Kryptonians. A defeat would seal Jon’s fate: Henshaw’s plan includes annihilating the planet, creating a mechanical army to dominate the remnants, and ultimately eliminating Clark, Lois, and Kara.
This season of Adventures marks a significant shift, as it is the first to be officially picked up by Adult Swim, departing from its previous late-night Cartoon Network airtime. Though this may seem like a minor change, it allows the show to evolve its tone and deliver a more action-packed 22 minutes with less comedic relief. Henshaw is determined to eliminate the Super-family or anyone standing in his path, deriving a twisted pleasure from their suffering as Kryptonite envelops Clark and Kara like a debilitating affliction. This escalation creates a darker atmosphere for the episode, while still maintaining the core essence of the show.
“Our first two seasons were designed for family audiences, but with Adult Swim’s involvement, we gained more creative freedom,” co-showrunner Jake Wyatt shared. In an interview with io9, Wyatt and fellow showrunner Brendan Clogher revealed that this newfound freedom allowed them to explore modern romance themes, such as technology-driven relationships and self-sabotage, while also embracing a more mature tone.
“We weren’t instructed to make the show more adult, but we always envisioned this character arc for our protagonists,” Wyatt explained. “As we crafted the season, we recognized that our heroes would grapple with their future and insecurities, facing challenges like never before. We aimed to write [the season] from an authentic, emotional perspective, which made the narrative feel more tangible and grounded.”
While earlier seasons of My Adventures With Superman focused on love, Clogher noted that this season centers on the “fear of the future.” Once the writing team identified this thematic thread, they strategically selected characters from the influential “Death of” and “Reign of the Supermen” story arcs. “We aimed to include characters who could pose a specific and personal threat to [our core cast] or have a significant impact on them,” Clogher stated.
Henshaw certainly embodies that threat, but the “severe effect” referenced by the showrunners is reciprocal. After Superman extracts the Kryptonite from him, Hank attempts to self-destruct, aiming to take his adversaries and the city down with him. It is only upon realizing Jon’s human heritage that he hesitates, devastated by the truth that he cannot be the bridge between humanity and extraterrestrial beings.
“I’m supposed to be the future. But they chose you, the aliens,” Henshaw exclaims in disbelief. “They made peace with you. Fell in love with you. You’re the future now.” This realization triggers a wave of emotion, leading him to break down just moments before the countdown reaches its end.
Though Henshaw has been thwarted, the Super-family still faces peril. Having exhausted his powers during their confrontation, Clark is now vulnerable. This situation poses a significant obstacle, compounded by the fact that the grim future remains unresolved—the episode concludes with a glimpse of Jon Lane (rather than “Kent”) being captured by Lex, who has seized control of this timeline and commands an army of robots.
To uncover how this story unfolds, viewers will need to continue watching My Adventures With Superman . The second half of the season has not been featured in any prior promotions, but it is clear that Clark and the rest are gearing up for challenging times ahead.
