NASA’s Mars Orbiter Maven: Investigating Its Mysterious End

In December, a healthy NASA orbiter vanished behind Mars as expected. when it reappeared, the spacecraft was irrevocably changed.

On June 3, the U.S. space agency announced the conclusion of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution mission, commonly known as Maven. A review board determined that the orbiter, which has been circling Mars for over 11 years, is now beyond reach.

Before Maven passed behind Mars on December 6, 2025, all systems were functioning normally. Yet, something inexplicable occurred during its brief disappearance. Data sent back to Earth suggested that Maven began to rotate uncontrollably. Typically, mission control would lose contact with the spacecraft for just 20 to 30 minutes during this maneuver, but they never regained the signal.

NASA’s anomaly review board, convened in February, concluded that the erratic spinning, combined with dwindling battery power, made recovery impossible. During a teleconference on Wednesday, officials expressed their sorrow over the mission’s end, which surpassed its original 10-year plan.

“The team feels like they have lost a beloved member with the conclusion of this mission,” stated project manager Mike Moreau from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

The decommissioning of Maven marks the end of an era in Mars exploration. NASA has lost a significant tool that not only transformed scientists’ understanding of the Martian atmosphere but also transmitted vast amounts of data to ground-based rovers.

It remains uncertain whether a meteor caused Maven’s malfunction. NASA is still investigating the incident’s root cause and is expected to release a final report later this year.

Since arriving at Mars in September 2014, Maven has concentrated on “atmospheric escape,” the process by which gases escape from the upper atmosphere of Mars into space. Its findings revealed that this phenomenon intensifies during solar storms, which unleash energy and particles from the sun. A significant space weather event in May 2024, one of the most powerful recorded at Mars in two decades, resulted in a surge of particles that stripped gas away and illuminated the planet with brilliant auroras.

“Our understanding of atmospheric escape at Mars now surpasses that of any other planet, including Earth,” remarked Shannon Curry, Maven’s principal investigator from the University of Colorado Boulder.

Maven discovered various types of auroras on Mars and assisted the Perseverance rover in capturing the first visible-light aurora from the Martian surface, providing insight into what astronauts might observe firsthand. The orbiter also demonstrated how a planet-wide dust storm in 2018 increased water loss to space, linking dust, climate, and the history of Mars’ ancient oceans.

One of Maven’s most pivotal discoveries involved a phenomenon known as “sputtering.” This process occurs when charged particles collide with the upper atmosphere, ejecting neutral atoms into space, akin to cannonballs splashing water from a pool. It is believed this process has been depleting Mars’ atmosphere for billions of years, offering insights for other planets as well.

The mission also yielded unexpected discoveries. Maven’s particle detector detected hard X-rays from a distant black hole system identified as Scorpius X-1, and the team used this unusual signal to gain a better understanding of the density of Mars’ upper atmosphere.

To its scientific contributions, Maven served a crucial role in communications. The spacecraft relayed data between Earth and surface missions like Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, and Perseverance. Although it managed only around 8 percent of all relay sessions, it accounted for nearly 18 percent of total data transmitted, thanks in part to an innovative coding scheme that enhanced the amount of information sent during each contact. At one point, Maven achieved the solar system record for the largest volume of data returned in a single relay session.

For now, Maven will continue to orbit Mars in an elongated path. NASA anticipates that the inactive spacecraft will remain in space for 50 to 100 years before its orbit gradually decays and it ultimately descends into Mars’ atmosphere. Officials assure that it poses no threat to other orbiters around the Red Planet.

To compensate for the loss of Maven’s relay capabilities, Mars Odyssey, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and European orbiters have modified their operations. NASA plans to establish a new Mars Telecommunications Network in the 2030s, collaborating with commercial partners to enhance communications and navigation services for future robotic and human missions.

For the team behind Maven, the loss feels deeply personal. Curry expressed that the group was “broken up” by the news. When asked what she would inscribe on Maven’s hypothetical tombstone, she replied without hesitation:

“Best Mars mission ever.”
