XPS 13: Dell’s First True Competitor to MacBook Neo

Dell has introduced the 2026 XPS 13, a compact, lightweight, and nearly portless laptop designed to rival Apple’s entry-level MacBook with its sleek aesthetics. This new model is set to make a significant impact by being the first to launch with an innovative Intel chip, priced to attract both college students and Apple enthusiasts alike.

One of the standout features to note is that the new XPS 13 starts at $700, while students can purchase it for as low as $600. For this competitive price, Dell ensures a premium experience with an all-CNC aluminum chassis that feels far more robust than typical PCs in the same price range. Dell is clearly positioning itself against the $600 MacBook Neo, which is known for its excellent build quality. It’s refreshing to see a manufacturer seriously committed to offering affordable laptops that don’t compromise on quality.

The XPS 13 comes equipped with a vibrant touchscreen boasting a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels. It features a backlit keyboard complemented by a multi-touch trackpad, which we can all hope will perform admirably. Weighing in at approximately 2.2 pounds, it is slightly lighter than the MacBook Neo’s 2.7 pounds, making it a travel-friendly option. the laptop’s thickness is a mere 12.7mm.

This laptop integrates Intel’s Core Series 3 “Wildcat Lake” processor. Earlier benchmarks indicated that the Intel Core i7 350 outperformed Apple’s A18 Pro, particularly in multicore tasks on a China-exclusive Honor X14 model. We are eager to see how this lightweight device handles Windows, especially since the base configuration includes only 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Users can upgrade to either 16GB or 32GB of RAM and expand the SSD to 1TB, though these enhancements will come at a higher cost. For those seeking greater performance, there is an option to select the Intel Core Ultra 7 355 Panther Lake chip.

One limitation of this device is its minimal I/O options, featuring just two USB-C ports. In contrast, Acer recently unveiled a budget laptop with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon C chip that includes an HDMI port. The XPS 13 is primarily designed for essential tasks such as web browsing and streaming, so it may not meet the needs of users requiring extensive connectivity. If you desire Thunderbolt 4 for increased data transfer speeds, you will need to choose a Panther Lake model.

When comparing prices, Apple’s MacBook Neo remains a more economical option overall, especially with student discounts that can bring it down to around $500. In a recent briefing, Dell Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke emphasized that the company is not focused on winning a pricing battle. Instead, he highlighted that Dell’s new laptop offers superior value with features like a 120Hz refresh rate that can adjust to 30Hz to conserve battery life, in contrast to the Neo’s maximum refresh rate of 60Hz.

The pricing of the XPS 13 is significantly lower than Dell’s 14- and 16-inch XPS models, which can approach $3,000 when equipped with an OLED display and a high-end Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processor. If the new XPS maintains its durable design, it could stand out as one of the few affordable PCs this year that deliver both quality aesthetics and functionality without breaking the bank.
