CCP Games, the innovative company responsible for the iconic space simulation game Eve Online, has formed a strategic partnership with Google, allowing the tech giant to acquire a minority stake in the company. This collaboration will enable Google’s DeepMind to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities by training its models using data from the game, as reported by Bloomberg.
Recently, CCP Games has undergone a rebranding to become Fenris Creations, shortly after successfully reacquiring the rights to Eve Online from Korean developer Pearl Abyss. This move signifies a new chapter in the game’s evolution and strategic direction.
According to Fenris Creations’ CEO, Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, Google’s investment is estimated to be “in the millions” of dollars. The initial focus for DeepMind will involve analyzing player behavior on specialized servers, as Eve Online presents challenges that current AI technologies have not yet successfully navigated. Adrian Bolton from DeepMind highlighted significant challenges such as long-term planning and continual learning that need to be addressed.
Eve Online has maintained its presence in the gaming world for over two decades, renowned for providing players with an unparalleled level of freedom in exploring the vast game universe. This attribute makes it an invaluable resource for DeepMind, offering rich social simulation data that can greatly benefit AI research. Pétursson remarked, “We jokingly say that the final boss for AI in games would obviously be Eve Online,” emphasizing how the game provides deep insights into human society and the intricate human condition.
What benefits will players receive from this collaboration beyond their actions being monitored by researchers? Although the details remain vague, the companies have assured that this partnership will also investigate new gameplay experiences facilitated by these advanced technologies. The ambiguity surrounding these future developments leaves much to the imagination.
Google’s AI research lab has a history of training its technology on a variety of games, ranging from classic arcade titles to the complex strategies of StarCraft II. As for the newly established Fenris Creations, the company is actively developing and maintaining several titles within the Eve Online universe. Upcoming releases include the first-person shooter spin-off Eve Vanguard and the newly launched mobile game Eve Galaxy Conquest, both designed to expand the franchise’s reach.
Additionally, the company is exploring the ambitious but potentially problematic venture of Eve Frontier, which is conceptualized as a blockchain-based spin-off previously referred to as Project Awakening. This project reflects the ongoing evolution of gaming technology and player engagement.
