Tensions are escalating once again between Brian McKnight and his family, as it has come to light that he has filed a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Julie McKnight and his son Brian McKnight Jr.. This legal action is not limited to family members; according to PEOPLE, he is also pursuing claims against media personalities Tasha K and Marc Lamont Hill, as well as the New York Post. Brian alleges that these entities exploited the tragic death of his late son Niko McKnight to propagate a false narrative about him, which he finds deeply troubling.

Unpacking the Legal Battle: Brian McKnight’s Defamation Lawsuit Against Julie McKnight & Brian McKnight Jr.
Reports from TMZ reveal that Brian McKnight accuses his ex-wife Julie, their son Brian Jr., and the aforementioned media personalities of colluding to tarnish his reputation. He describes their actions as a blatant attempt to profit from what he categorizes as “malicious character assassination.” The lawsuit was filed in Georgia on April 21, wherein he claims that a “shockingly dishonest” narrative misrepresents him as a father who abandoned his children and failed to express love to his terminally ill son Niko. Brian asserts that these damaging allegations have severely impacted his reputation, career, and family dynamics, prompting him to pursue legal recourse. The lawsuit reportedly seeks compensatory damages to address these grievances.
“Defendant Julie McKnight claimed that their son repeatedly expressed ‘I love you’ during a phone call, while Plaintiff allegedly refused to reciprocate, which painted him as emotionally cruel and indifferent towards his terminally ill son,” the legal documents purportedly state.
This situation is not new for Brian, as he previously took legal action against Julie in 2025. His earlier lawsuit accused her of defamation, slander, and libel, alongside allegations that she claimed he was responsible for emotional abuse and neglect, as well as his sons’ struggles to find success in the music industry.
Insights from Julie McKnight About Brian’s Relationship with Niko
As previously reported by The Shade Room, the tragic passing of Niko McKnight in May 2025 was due to colon cancer. Shortly after, Julie provided an exclusive statement to Page Six, accusing Brian of failing to express his love for Niko during his final moments.
“Those words should come easily, freely, and often. And in Niko’s case, lying on his sick bed, fighting through pain, fear, and uncertainty, he deserved that love spoken over him more than ever. There is nothing more heartbreaking than hearing your child say that all they want is to simply hear his father say ‘those three words,’” she articulated. She added, “No child should have to long for something so basic, so pure, so necessary to the human heart. As his mother, hearing those words from him cut deeper than anything I could have imagined.”
Brian Jr. & Marc Lamont Hill Discuss Brian Sr.’s Distanced Relationship with Niko
Brian McKnight Jr. has echoed similar sentiments, claiming that his father refused to tell Niko that he loved him before Niko’s passing. In December 2025, Marc Lamont Hill published an exclusive interview featuring Brian Jr. and Julie, where Brian Jr. shared one of his most painful experiences — receiving a call from Niko in tears.
“All my brother wanted and needed […] asked for, was my father to tell him that he loves him […] and my father responds to him, ‘I can’t arbitrarily say that I love you.’ But this is the man that wanted to help him?” Brian Jr. recounted.
Marc also expressed that listening to Julie and Brian Jr. recount Niko’s final moments was particularly poignant during the interview. “I can’t imagine how impossibly difficult this entire ordeal was for the entire family,” he reflected.
