Makes Controversial Pearl Harbor Joke …
During Meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister

President Donald Trump sparked controversy on March 19, 2026, when he made a joke about Pearl Harbor during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
During the White House meeting, a journalist inquired why Trump did not inform America’s allies, including Japan, before escalating tensions with Iran.
Trump responded by stating he did not want to “signal too much” prior to the attack. He then made a jarring joke, asking, “We wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor?”
The room fell silent as he referenced the 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor, which resulted in the deaths of 2,403 Americans in just two hours. Despite the somber atmosphere, Trump continued his remarks.
He chuckled and added, “I know you believe in surprise, I think, much more so than us.”
