A baby Japanese macaque named Punch has gone viral for capturing hearts around the world. His mother neglected him at birth, leading him to find comfort in a stuffed monkey. However, according to expert Michael Stern, he will eventually need a living, loving mom in his life.
Michael Stern is a Harvard-trained primatologist with decades of experience studying gorillas in captivity and in the wild. He emphasizes that every primate needs something to love when they’re babies, just like humans do.
Stern states that it has been scientifically proven that nearly every mammal has the same basic emotions as humans. Every baby needs something to direct that loving emotion toward. He remarked, “To me, it’s kind of sad that what he had was this stuffed animal.”
He continues to emphasize the importance of maternal care in a natural environment. A baby macaque needs the stimuli that only a mother can provide. This cannot be replicated by a human or a toy.
Stern believes it is beneficial for Punch to be among a large troop of other monkeys. As he grows, he will likely integrate into the social atmosphere.
Regarding individuals like Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan, who have offered to buy Punch from the zoo, Stern suggests that while the zoo is not entirely at fault, there are better ways to help.
Stern urges Punch’s fans to remember that videos online may only capture moments of happiness or sadness. For animals, these moments represent their entire lives, and we must support them.
The expert points out that the monkeys live on concrete with limited grass or trees. Those advocating for their rescue should consider a broader perspective.
Michael Stern is affiliated with the New Nature Foundation, an organization dedicated to halting deforestation in Africa through innovative technologies. For those inspired by Punch’s story, donations can help support this vital cause.
