Nintendo is reportedly considering the introduction of a Playdate-style crank for the Switch 2, as revealed by a recently discovered patent from Nintendo Patents Watch. This innovative accessory aims to enhance the gaming experience by incorporating tracking for rotational movement, further expanding the capabilities of the already versatile Joy-Con 2 controllers, which feature motion detection and mouse controls. This addition could open up new gameplay possibilities, making the Switch 2 even more engaging for players of all ages.
According to the details outlined in the patent application, this crank accessory is designed to magnetically attach to the side of a Joy-Con 2, similar to how the controllers’ wrist straps function. Games that support this unique accessory could utilize the Joy-Con 2’s mouse sensor to track the rotational movements of the crank, allowing for immersive gameplay experiences. Titles such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons or other fishing games seem to be prime candidates for integration with this accessory, though Nintendo is known for its creative surprises, suggesting there could be even more unconventional applications.

In another intriguing patent, a similar concept is proposed involving a clickable wheel. The illustrations depict an accessory that resembles a lighter, but its functionality could extend to being utilized while sliding a Joy-Con 2 across a surface, potentially introducing varying levels of resistance or friction to the Switch 2’s mouse controls. This innovation could enhance the tactile feedback and overall user experience, making gameplay feel more physical and engaging.
While these patents provide a glimpse into Nintendo’s creative process, it’s important to note that there is no assurance these concepts will evolve into actual products. Nevertheless, they showcase the Switch 2’s potential for embracing unique and whimsical accessories, reminiscent of the innovative spirit that characterized the successful Nintendo Wii era, where unconventional peripherals became a hallmark of the gaming experience.
The most adventurous accessory introduced for the original Switch was the Nintendo Labo, which featured cardboard attachments transforming the console into everything from a virtual reality headset to a simple fishing rod. The addition of a crank could signal the beginning of a series of equally adventurous accessories for Nintendo’s new console, paving the way for inventive gameplay mechanics that could redefine how users interact with their gaming experiences.
