X Ads: Elon Unveils Future with AI Targeting and Grok Integration

The application previously known as Twitter is gearing up for a significant initiative focused on holiday advertising. This includes an enhanced ad targeting system powered by xAI’s Grok engine alongside innovative ad presentation options aimed at making X ads visually striking. The ultimate goal is to boost user engagement and drive a more favorable response within the app.

During an engaging X Spaces session on Wednesday, X owner Elon Musk and the X advertising team shared their ambitious vision for the future of advertising on the platform. They made a compelling case to potential advertising partners, highlighting systematic improvements that promise to enhance ad effectiveness.

As Musk articulated:

“We’re focused on transforming X into the premier platform for advertising globally, and a crucial component of this strategy involves leveraging the most advanced AI available, which is recognized for achieving the highest intelligence benchmarks—this is the Grok AI. The capabilities of Grok AI empower us to intricately match products and services with consumers who are genuinely interested in them.”

The overview illustrates that X’s primary selling point is its advanced Grok AI system, which has significantly improved ad targeting capabilities through a systematic understanding of individual user interests.

Musk asserts that this is a substantial enhancement compared to the past, noting that the ad targeting process on Twitter was often “somewhat random,” lacking effective targeting at times. With Grok, he claims, there have been remarkable advancements, which now allow all users to see more pertinent ads within the app.

Moreover, Grok has significantly contributed to improved brand safety, a major concern for advertisers on X. The advertising team has been promoting the latest brand safety metrics resulting from Grok’s strategic ad placements.

Brand safety issues were a significant reason why numerous advertisers withdrew from X after Elon Musk took control. His shift in approach resulted in lowered thresholds for ad placements, causing many ads to appear alongside inappropriate content. Additionally, Musk’s confrontational remarks towards advertisers, suggesting they “go f*** themselves” if they were displeased, led many of X’s advertising partners to reassess their spending strategies.

However, some advertisers have reportedly reconsidered their stance, particularly in light of the upcoming 2024 election results, leading them to reevaluate their advertising strategies on X. Despite this shift, X’s advertising revenue remains significantly lower than it was during the Twitter era, although there are expectations for gradual improvement this year.

With the advancements in AI targeting and ad placement, there is potential for a noticeable improvement in X’s advertising performance. This is not the only enhancement that Musk and his team are promoting.

The X team has also revamped the ad display method within the app by prohibiting hashtags and limiting the use of emojis in advertisements. Additionally, they have introduced a new “aesthetic score” for ads. This new system evaluates ad visuals, with better-looking promotions, as determined by X’s comprehensive assessments, costing advertisers less.

“Essentially, unattractive and jarring ads will not be tolerated. We’re not implying that every ad needs to be a masterpiece, but it certainly cannot be an eyesore. Our belief is that enhancing the overall beauty of the system is essential.”

X indicates that Grok will evaluate all ad creatives to determine the aesthetic quality of each advertisement.

“Furthermore, we will reward ads that feature high-quality, engaging landing pages. The longer an average user engages with your website or app post-click on an ad, the more favorably you will be treated in the auction process.”

This strategy appears logical; however, the rationale behind the aesthetic score is less clear, as X has not provided concrete measures to demonstrate how this will enhance ad performance based on user feedback. While measuring ad effectiveness through engagement aligns well with actual user experiences, the aesthetic score seems largely influenced by Elon Musk’s personal preferences rather than empirical response data.

We will have to observe whether this initiative leads to improved engagement with advertisements.

In addition, X is in the process of developing innovative ad formats, including updated Dynamic Product Ads, which are designed to showcase relevant products to users based on AI-driven targeting.

Elon Musk also stated his vision of one day integrating advertisements into the responses of its Grok chatbot, providing relevant ads based on user queries directed at Grok.

Eventually, Musk envisions a future where Grok manages the entire advertising process. Advertisers would simply upload their information into the system, allowing Grok to handle everything autonomously.

Grok is sophisticated enough that you should be able to upload an advertisement and let it take care of everything else. There will be no need for your further involvement.”

This concept echoes Mark Zuckerberg’s promotion of Meta’s increasingly AI-driven advertising processes.

The final element will be the introduction of “X finance,” part of Elon Musk’s broader vision for an “everything app” on the platform. Musk asserts that this will enable X users to purchase products directly through the platform with just one click.

Assessing the potential value of X ads remains challenging at this stage. While X’s internal data indicates a loss of users and relevance, the platform claims to be gaining audience traction.

However, overall audience metrics may not be significant to individual brands, as long as your target consumers are present, your brand should also have a presence on X. With the enhanced targeting capabilities powered by Grok, the system may now be more effective in generating results for your brand.

Musk also emphasizes that X is the platform of choice for CEOs, heads of state, and “influencers in real life” seeking information:

“They do not turn to TikTok; while TikTok is a decent platform, and Instagram has its merits, influential individuals gravitate towards X.”

According to Musk, this indicates that X has the potential for “trillions in buying power.”

He makes a compelling argument, pointing out that prominent figures such as himself, Marc Benioff, Michael Dell, and Larry Ellison are active users on X, while their engagement on other platforms is not as vigorous.

Is this potential worth your attention and advertising budget? The effectiveness will ultimately be revealed through results, but X asserts that its advertising system is more capable than ever of delivering pertinent ads.

These insights provide fascinating perspectives on the evolution of X ads and the overall vision for the app’s future.
