The increasingly controversial reputation of Elon Musk among U.S. liberals has become so polarizing that it is leading some individuals to turn away not only from Tesla but also from the broader category of electric vehicles (EVs) entirely. This shift in consumer sentiment is significant, as it underscores the impact of public figures on buying behavior in the automotive market.
A recent study published in the esteemed journal Nature has undertaken an in-depth examination of whether public perceptions of Musk have made Tesla vehicles more divisive compared to other electric vehicle brands. Researchers conducted a series of comprehensive surveys starting in November 2023 and extending to March 2025. Participants were asked whether they would consider purchasing a Tesla or an unspecified EV, providing valuable insights into shifting consumer preferences.
The findings revealed that “liberals showed declining intentions to purchase Teslas compared with other EVs, and, to a lesser extent, declining intentions to purchase electric vehicles in general,” as noted by the researchers. This trend indicates a growing divide in the market influenced by personal opinions about Musk, which could have long-term implications for Tesla’s sales and the reputation of electric vehicles.
The research covers a critical timeframe that includes the period before and after Elon Musk became heavily involved in U.S. politics, beginning with his public endorsement of Donald Trump and extending through his short-lived role in the Trump administration. This analysis provides a clear view of how Musk’s political affiliations have reshaped his public image.
Musk’s support for Trump was notably expressed on July 13, coinciding with a significant event in Trump’s life. Musk stated, “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” on the platform X. His financial backing totaled an impressive $277 million, aimed at supporting Trump and various Republican candidates. Additionally, his America PAC was involved in a controversial canvassing operation, which faced accusations of harsh working conditions and unrealistic performance expectations.
After Trump’s victory in November 2024, Musk was appointed to lead the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Under his management, DOGE implemented significant budget cuts and job eliminations across multiple federal agencies, including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Alarmingly, some global health experts estimate that these cuts to USAID’s anti-HIV/AIDS programs have led to over 90,000 deaths worldwide, raising serious concerns about the social implications of such political decisions.
Ultimately, Musk’s relationship with Trump deteriorated, leading him to resign from DOGE. However, the damage to his reputation among liberals had already taken effect. His recent efforts to establish a new political party have yet to gain significant momentum, indicating a challenging road ahead for his political aspirations.
Perhaps most concerning for Musk is the decline in Tesla sales. The study highlighted that while conservatives remain largely uninterested in electric vehicles, the departure of liberal customers has created a substantial gap in the market that new buyers have not filled. This shift in consumer behavior poses a notable threat to Tesla’s future.
Earlier this month, Tesla revealed a staggering 13% year-over-year decline in car sales for the second quarter. Additionally, reports indicate that Tesla has ceased taking new orders for its Model S and Model X vehicles in Europe, as reported by Electrek, further illustrating the challenges the company faces.
Despite requests for comment from Gizmodo, Tesla has not responded. The researchers of the study emphasized that in subsequent surveys, liberal participants exhibited a marked decrease in their support for electric vehicles, particularly when harboring negative opinions about Musk. This “Tesla backlash effect,” coupled with the enduring skepticism of conservatives towards EVs, suggests that a polarizing CEO can adversely affect not just their brand but the entire electric vehicle industry.
