AI Glasses for Athletes: Meta Unveils Oakley Collaboration

Meta has officially unveiled its latest innovation in smart eyewear, now referred to as “AI glasses,” featuring a sports-oriented variant developed in collaboration with Oakley. This exciting announcement may deviate slightly from earlier reports, yet it highlights Meta’s ongoing commitment to blending technology with everyday life.

As showcased in the promotional material featuring renowned sports personalities, the Oakley HSTN glasses by Meta are designed not only for athletes but also for everyday users. This dual-targeting approach aims to enhance the lifestyle of a wide audience by integrating cutting-edge technology with practicality.

According to Meta’s official statement:

The Oakley Meta HSTN (pronounced HOW-stuhn), inspired by the contemporary HSTN design of Oakley eyewear, merges striking aesthetics with state-of-the-art technology. Capture your adventures hands-free using the integrated camera and share your unique perspective with ease. Enjoy your favorite music, listen to engaging podcasts, and more through high-quality open-ear speakers seamlessly embedded in the frames. With an IPX4 rating for water resistance, these glasses empower you to push your limits while staying connected.”

Essentially, this new device shares many features with the previously released Ray-Ban AI glasses, but with the added benefit of water resistance. Additionally, Meta highlights that the HSTN glasses offer an extended battery life, an upgraded high-resolution camera, and integrated support through Meta AI during activities, enhancing the user experience significantly.

However, it is important to note that the latest device does not incorporate additional data tracking features, which had been speculated to be included based on earlier reports about the Oakley collaboration that surfaced in January.

Initial rumors suggested that Meta’s athletic eyewear would be modeled after Oakley’s more avant-garde “Sphaera” design, featuring a centrally positioned camera to minimize weight. This speculation, while intriguing, did not materialize in the final product.

This final launch version diverges from initial expectations, predominantly focusing on style rather than groundbreaking technological advancements at this point. This strategic choice may appeal to a wide range of consumers seeking fashionable yet functional eyewear.

Nevertheless, Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses have experienced strong sales, and the addition of an Oakley variant is likely to capture the interest of even more consumers. As individuals increasingly look to integrate AI into their daily routines, this product provides an attractive option.

While Meta’s AI capabilities may offer basic performance enhancement through generic feedback, it was anticipated that this would mark the company’s initial venture into fitness tracking, providing deeper insights into athletic performance via the device.

Implementing such features, however, poses challenges. Current fitness trackers often utilize pulse measurement for feedback, a function that Meta’s glasses do not support. Potentially, the device could offer distance tracking using GPS, and there may be plans to introduce a Strava-like application for this purpose, along with other tracking capabilities in future iterations.

Yet, it appears that the integration of these functionalities might be more suitably achieved through a Meta-branded smartwatch. The company has oscillated on its smartwatch plans, leaving the door open for future developments in its broader wearables strategy.

Back in 2022, Meta temporarily halted its smartwatch project due to cost-cutting measures and various complications. However, the company is also exploring a wrist-based control device, utilizing electromyography (EMT), aligning with its advancements in augmented reality (AR) technologies.

This wrist-based device could play a significant role in enhancing the functionality of the upcoming AR glasses, potentially integrating fitness tracking features that would elevate the utility of the new Oakley glasses.

For now, the focus remains on introducing a fresh iteration of Meta’s smart glasses, showcasing a new design aimed at attracting a different demographic. While it’s debatable whether these glasses will “change everything,” as claimed by Patrick Mahomes in the promotional video, they undoubtedly represent a noteworthy expansion of Meta’s growing portfolio of wearables.

Meta has announced that the Oakley Meta HSTN will be available for pre-order starting July 11th at a retail price of $499 USD. Additional models within the new Meta Oakley collection will be launched later this summer, starting at 9 USD.
