Backstory on the Gripping Narrative: In 2022, the acclaimed horror filmmakers Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, known for their work on Sinister, collaborated to adapt Joe Hill’s haunting short story The Black Phone. While the initial film concluded with a tense resolution, it seems the iconic Grabber (portrayed by Ethan Hawke) is far from finished, as he makes a chilling return in the upcoming sequel set to premiere this fall.
The first installment captivated audiences as young Finn (played by Mason Thames) faced the terrifying ordeal of being kidnapped by the Grabber, trapped in a dark room with a mysterious rotary phone that bizarrely connected him to the spirits of the killer’s past victims. With their spectral guidance, Finn managed to outsmart the Grabber and reunite with his family. As excitement builds for Black Phone 2, Blumhouse Productions has released three suspenseful teasers that confirm the Grabber’s menacing return, this time targeting children at Colorado’s Alpine Lake Youth Camp during the chilling winter months.

Each teaser is packed with eerie, grainy visuals showcasing the snow-blanketed camp and its haunting facilities. Disturbing images depict young boys who have fallen victim to the Grabber, highlighting the aftermath of his horrific actions. One victim is chillingly depicted frozen in ice, another grotesquely crumpled beneath a bed, while a third, bearing half of a burned face, appears throughout the teasers—either glaring at the camera or fading in and out of existence without uttering a word. Each chilling teaser also features a single word flashing on the screen, collectively forming the unsettling phrase “Word is Just.” Furthermore, a mysterious phone booth located on the premises houses its own black phone, which ominously continues to ring, beckoning for someone to pick up.
During April’s CinemaCon, Universal Pictures presented exclusive footage from Black Phone 2, hinting that the Grabber utilizes the titular phone to return and torment the surviving children from the original film. If this theory holds true, it’s clear that the Grabber remains as cunning and dangerous as ever. Fans eagerly await the unveiling of the film’s additional twists and turns when it hits theaters on October 17.
